I guess thats how you spell it. :-) I'll be ceasing to build for awhile here shortly. I am putting our house on the market as we are having a new one built and I have to focus all the attention I can on getting our current home in order to sell. After living here for about 9 years, we are "movin' on up" as they say. My new digs will feature my own modeling/rec room that measures roughly 24'x27'. The wife, bless her heart, told me I could have that for "my area". I should be in somewhere in the nieghborhood of October or November. Now begins the long process of boxing up the kits and built ups for storage while we wait. Now you know why I asked about inventorying in another post elsewhere! :-) I'll continue to check in here to see how the gang is doing. Any advice on moving and storing my kits is welcomed, needed, encouraged as I haven't had to move or store these things before. Thanks. "Q"

I've moved twice within the last 18 months... all I have to say is good luck!
No, seriously, mark the boxes fragile and that heavier boxes should not be placed on those containing the kits... all pretty obvious really... the more difficult one is packing up the dios and built kits... that's still got me stumped!

As far as packing up built kits, invest in styrofoam peanuts or plastic easter grass (maybe both!). I packed all my models myself in plastic containers and liberally used the above materials to keep them protected. Sure, there were repairs to be made, but it was minor things for the most part. One other tip, if you can, put each kit in its own plastic baggie, that'll keep any broken parts from vanishing in transit, and you'll know which piece goes with which kit (something that I wish I had done!).

When you move, you may want to transport those boxes yourself and not leave them in the rather merciless hands of the moving company.

My friend had a fairly effective way of shipping items. He would put the model/diorama inside a plastic bag or garbage bag. Then the whole thing would go inside a box that best fit the whole thing. He would squeeze out as much air and space as possible. Using that self expanding foam like Great Stuff he would spray inside the box to form fit it as much as possible and to keep it from sliding.

Wehn you unpack the box you simply slide out the foam and the bag with the model.Everything has been protected upder a relatively hard shell.

Matt,

Congrats on the new home and your own space. Good luck on moving the built kits. I had at least casualties when we moved here.

As an aside when I seen your post I thought.."Uh huh...he's got scooter fever!"

Matt, does this mean you won't be coming to meetings either? I'll miss your how to demos.

Congrats on the new house. 24 x 27? I'd kill to have even one quarter that room.

Rodger, I'll still make the meetings. We are only moving exactly 1 mile from where we are now. More than likely we will execute the move on our own and forego the movers.
Thanks for all the info folks. I'll take it to heart when the time comes. We did our contract yesterday. They are scheduled to begin in a couple of weeks. We have 45 days to get our house under contract and all that goes with selling a house. Oh goodie. Thanks again. "Q"

Good Luck Matt! Ahhhhhh the problem with packing built up kits. I have been placing all my kits in IMEX boxes. The ones that can be secured to the base with a nut and bolt thru the bottom have been secured. I will box these back into the original box and then into a case with the others. My other kits like my M 113s that cant be secured go into plastic bags then a box of packing peanuts. I am expecting some loss of small items that I can hopefully repair. Good Luck with the Move. I'll let you know how mine goes. We should be unpacking around the same time ...... I hope!

I wish it was only scooter fever. With two major bike events in the local area coming up, it is making this move thing even harder. I really want to attend the events but need to focus on gettinghouse in order. That, and the fact that my baseball team is playing in a tourney the first week of July, and I am the primary catcher, our back up catcher is out...... more folks coming thru for training before deployment....arrgh. I need about a 36 hour day! :-) Just gotta be flexible I guess. Thanks. "Q"

Congratulations Matt,

Make sure you post some pics of the new workshop when its done.

Just pack the models like you're bringing them to a show, don't let anyone else touch them and use a separate load in your pickup to take them to the new place. Good thing is that it is only a mile.

Stay safe,

Good to see ya back Dave..
What Dave said is where I was going too.
If possible get the local model geeks to come help you move the stash.
no one will treat your kits with as much care as you will, but other modelers will come close.

I've moved short distances a few times, most often just taking car load after carload myself, but the last time I had the local crew over for just the hobby room.

Pack it up yourself ahead of time, don't hand out the beers until the move is done and life is good.

I've also helped other guys in the local crew move their stuff too. It's almost like cheating on your stash, but drooling over another modelers kit stash is almost as good as buying new kits for yourself.
