Yesterday I was sneaking a few kits into the house while SWMBO was away. I had won four kits at a raffle the IPMS club had last week. My eldest daughter was in the house and said, "Mom asked me once if you ever got models behind her back." Heavens! Fortunately I have trained her well, she told her Mother, "no, not that I know of." Of course now I can't give her to hard a time if she tells a little white fib once in a while.
I explained that a lot of people did this, sneak kits past their significant others. She seemed relieved that I wasn't the only weird one.

I progressed from sneaking kits past my parents as a teenager (when I was supposed to be saving for a car) to sneaking them past SWMBO.
The easiest is just having them delivered to work, and leaving them in the car until the lil' lady goes to bed... On the odd occasion that I have been particularly excited about a kit and just had to say something, my best bud Mattman in London has been my accomplice...
The excuse is something like "Matt found these on [insert name here
]e-bay, LHS, department store, etc at a fraction of the price they normally sell for. We'll settle up later when he comes down to visit or we go visit him and Les. Besides... Les (Matt's wife) doesn't have an issue with it, so I don't know why you do..." :-) :-) :-) Funny thing is Mattman's getting back into modelling (already signed up on Armorama
), and will probably use the same excuse as me... :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

I don't sneek the kits in without telling her - that'd be a bit stupid as I model in the main family room. I don't always (read seldom do) tell her the real price though!!

Indeed you are. Though I can't complain really, mine bought me a new compressor for Father's Day...been using it for a month now
She really hasn't a problem with my buying kits either. We've a "don't ask don't tell policy" I never ask how much her new dresses, shoes, etc, cost and she never asks how much I've tied up in my stash.
Everyone is happy.

So lucky! My girlfriend thinks modeling is for little children. Hmmm. Maybe it's time to change a girlfriend.

Halfyank,
I fear for you that in the not so far away future a sizeable chunck of your modelling money will be spent on your daughter..

Oh, what a tangled web we weave...
However, my wife is a strong supporter of my modeling. She thinks it is important for me to have a creative outlet. We both have our habits, hers is dried flower arrangements... Hehehe, this also has proven to be quite useful.

Why dont you tell your wife that youre just keeping them for a modelling "friend" of yours whos wifes so terrible she wont let him buy his kits.

Never had that problem myself but on the other hand I usually dont say much about the amount of money that is involved, not only on kits but on reference etc.
Cheers

I remember it was shortly after one of my 9 surgeries, I could barely walk never mind carry anything. Al LaFleche and I went to a show together and I got carried away with raffles, and over spending. We had a bad ride home, lots of traffic so we got to my house kinda late. Al had to carry all my stuff to the door for me, I was going to open the door and have him sneak it in my modeling room. Instead he gets me to the door, says hold this for a second, then proceeds to stack over 200.00 worth of spending in my hands and 13 great 1:35 scale and 48th scale raffle wins! He rings the door bell and runs away giggling and laughing like a 8th grade prankster. My wife opens the door and there I was, paralized like a deer in the head lights

She looks and sees Al running away, thankfully she thought that was funny because I would have been a dead man if it played out any differant. I still owe Al one . Hmmm, maybe those birthday pictures at Hooters....
A wise man once said, forgiveness is easier than getting permission from a wife. I'm starting to think he was right. Thankfully, humans are the only animals that can be skinned more than once.

I boldly have my kits delivered right to our house. When she sees another package on the front steps she refers to it as my 'having received another gift'. I don't let it bother me. As long as I can afford it and it's less per month than she spends on her horse I'm ok with the odd comment or two. I just wonder what what my parents would think if they could my stash in the basement. The things a 46 year old man worries about!

Fortunately, my better half and I have come to an agreement. I don't knock her hobby (scrapbooking and all its accoutrements) and she lets me get what I want. Sure she shakes her head at the growing stash of kits (is there such a thing as a shrinking stash? Never seen one.) but we keep each other in balance.

I'm lucky in that Niner-domestic supports my hobby in a big way, actually TELLING me to go and buy a kit or two. She still got a little POd last night when she opened my e-mail and I had notices that I had won 2 auctions...but then I reminded her of the new set of golf clubs I just bought her (and the lessons to go with them) AND I showed her that I paid less than 50% of the retail value.

With about 200 pairs of shoes/ boots/ trainers etc, my beloved better not say a
word. I still hide my stash under my desk and in the shed though :-) :-)

After reading the majority of the input to this thread, I guess I can be grateful that I do not have a wife or girlfriend to answer to.
Come on people, you can't be serious!!! Are you talking about partners or prison guards.
I can't imagine that my partner would have any objection against me buying or making models. I certainly can't imagine that any threat (?) would prevent me from buying and making models.
However, then I make sure that she does not "suffer" the consequences (read: time spent on) of my hobby, or i make sure that i do my part of the homework, shopping, coocking...
Isn't it just a question of being reasonable? Of not spending an unacceptable amount of money/time on these things so that the family priorities are not hurt?
Does this not apply to all aspects of life? Like eg the amount of shoes that she is buying, or the amount of time spend in the pub, or the amount of alcohol consumed or....
For those here that are really serious about lying to their partners about buying a "piece of plastic in a cardboard box" I would really advise to have a decent reflection on their priorities.

HI
Until recently I was single. Before becoming domesticated I used to plop my butt in front of the TV with a stack of movies and watch them and build until sunday night.
I am pretty up front with the new missus to be. She things SF stuff is cool, has an interest in armour and loves AC. She knows all about etch, resin and styrene and has assembled Fruil tracks
I just do not tell how expensive it is and when I do buy, I always try to buy on sale

Ciao all,
I am probably the luckiest of all. My work area is so cluttered my wife wouldn't know if I bought a new boat, much less a model. Plus, I am such a bad liar, she would know anyway.
Ciao for now

I fear truth is the best policy in these instances. This situation can only comeback to haunt you later.
I don't sneek stuff into the house, nor does the wife. We set the budget and we are free to use our allowance as we see fit - save or blow it all.
