Do any of you notice that shortly after a Hobby Lobby 50% off sale, many of the model site sale forums (and eBay) feature kits that are Hobby Lobby staples? Good kits for sure, like the Tamiya Marder III or III M, T-55, Willys Jeep, Panthers and King Tigers appear at prices near the MSRP but still at a discount.

Just something I've noticed after the past two HL 50% off sales. Of course it may just be a coincidence.

Yea, I've noticed that, too, especially on Ebay. I am sure that many are reselling what they purchased from Hobby Lobby.

Guilty!! I did it once before it got popular and everyone started doing it, I did make a nice little profit but it would not be worth it now.

Rob,

I noticed the HL phenomena a while back. I would sooner pick up something for a member here and send it to them at cost than go in and buy everything on the shelves and rat hole it to sell it on Ebay. I am beginning to think that is why the selection is getting to be so poor on some of the more popular kits: Guys hit the store first thing Monday morning before working stiffs like me can and buy everything to sell on Ebay...

Another reason that retirement is good. I have done my "working stiff" tour already. I can hit three HLs within 25 minutes of the 0900 opening. You need to check back daily though as they continue to put new stock on the shelves throughout the week.. The models make for great gifts. Out here.

Some guy got seriously flamed on Hyperscale awhile back because of doing this. He was posting these kits for sale while the HL sale was going on. He didnt even repsond to the posts, but the guys who were flaming him were dead on target with their posts. As with Mike, I am within just a few minutes of 3 shops here in the Spings area and if I get froggy, I can make the 30 minute trip to Pueblo to the store there. I used to go hog wild and buy tons of stuff, but have since cut back considerably. Namely do to running out of shelf space and budget constraints as well. Now its just one or two kits that I want and don't already have. ok, I'm rambling now so I'll shut up. "Q"

It makes sense now. I usually hit the stores late afternoon. I realy wanted to do well this time around as it was the first time they had Dragon kits. That explains why the Armor and Aircraft section had the appearance of devstation. Well, I am modeled out for the time being. Waiting on my backorder of the Dragon 3 in 1 late Tiger and Panzer IVe and only have the hots for the 350 scale North Carolina which I can't afford right now.

I'm with you there Shaun. This last Hobby Lobby sale started on Memorial Day. I don't like going to stores on holidays, because I think those folks should have it off also. By the time I went there on Tuesday it was picked clean. Not one of the new kits I'd seen in the week before. I wonder how many of those wound up on ebay?

Rodger, I am certain that much of it is resold on the "bay". The HL deal is too easy too pass up. Like I said, great gifts and also great trading material too. If Matt is getting to the Pueblo HL in thirty minutes then the Colorado DPS is at the donut shop when he is heading down I-25. Before I could go to the sales myself I would do a Recon and have a friend or realitive hit the place for me. Out here.

Just to clarify my position, I have no position regarding modelers buying just to resell. I see both sides of the situation. I was just making an observation.

I do see a difference between buying just to resell and buying as future gifts or trading material. But I don't really care if someone does or doesn't do it.

Roger Robin. Your observation is shared by others. Your post just did the tangent thing. Out here.

:-) Actually I happen to know Matt lives a bit closer to Pueblo than most folks in the Springs. He's pretty close to me and I can make it in about 30 minutes, if I drive the 75mph speed limit most of the way. :-)

At least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Back to Robin's point, I don't begrudge people making a profit either. I have bought extras to have on hand for trading purposes, just not to resell. Doesn't stop me from wishing it didn't happen, but I have plenty of kits in the stash already, not getting a DML Tiger Early 3 in 1 isn't going to kill me.

I figure if folks are buying to resell or speculate that the kit will become rare and high priced (DML M4A1 comes to mind), that's their business and it's their money they are risking.

If that $36 Wespe they bought for $18 at HL sells on eBay and nets them a profit, that is good for them. If the savings were passed onto the buyer because the final bid was less than the normal retail price, that is good for the buyer. He saved some money on his purchase.

Conversely, the kit may sell for less than the $18 or not at all. Then the modeler who speculated on the value of the kit is out some money.

I have to admit that I bought a bunch of the Esci armor kits that I ran across in an odd lots store several years ago. I remember paying $4.99 for M60A1 Blazer kits and $2.99 for the T-55 kits. I did pass some kits on to fellow modelers searching for them way before Italeri reissued the kits. But the primary reason I bought them was to build them or use them for parts.

That's the best of the three anyway, assuming you mean 8th street. The Woodmen and Palmer Park stores should be ashamed of themselves.

I did drive down to Pueblo last sale just to check it out. Or rather I had my daughter drive me so she could get freeway practice. Nice trip anyway, but you sure cleaned them out.
