I was wondering if anyone has used this idea for finding small parts that have fallen on the floor, be it carpet or bare wood. What if I used one of those clothing lint removers to pick up very small pieces that are not easy to see. All you'd have to do it to pass the roller across the floor to cover the area that it fell on to and VOILA!! (hopefully) there it is stuck to the tape that's on the roller!

Ah... beat back that carpet monster! This is the main reason why I don't do PE anymore.

You might crush or break the piece though.

The best thing to do on a hardwood or non-carpeted floor is to get a flash light and put it on the floor to cast a shadow of the piece. The key is to get the light right down on the floor and shine it across the floor parallel to the floor.

Scott is dead on with that. I have spend the better part of many a night on hands and knees with a flashnight on the basement floor...
Keeping the floor, assuming you work over cement, swept nightly helps out too.

Ahh... many small but important parts have fallen on my carpet. 90% of the time I find them immediately, 5% get's found a week later and the other 5% is is a write of because I just rolled over it with my chairs' casters.
The best way is to be methodical in your sweep. I use the adhesive side of a 2" wide masking tape and just pat the carpet with it.
I use the same method to remove cat hairs from my shirt when she sleeps on my chest or any furniture.
