Fellow Oinkaloids

For your information, "Turret Toad" aka Carlton Williams, aka Lord Sand Dune, (a DSB member currently serving in Iraq), has been floating an idea around about a possible DSB group build with an Operation Iraqi Freedom theme.

Nothing is firmed up yet, but a central theme for the build appears to be a model based on an actual vehicle, helo, aircraft, figure, dio etc., that has actually been in, or is in, the Iraq theatre. There are a lot of pics out there to use for ideas,---- so those are his thoughts at this time.

The concept is currently a work in progress at this time, but if I know Toadster, this will be a fun DSB groupie type build thingie. (I checked the DSB bylaws by the way, and we will let wolves in on this one also.)

Toad is home now for a week or so, and returns to Iraq May 2nd (I believe), to complete his tour some time early next year. As his idea gains more structure I'm sure he'll post here.

No time frame has been discussed so far, but a vote off of completed models by the DSB membership will garner the winner a ceramic "Pink Toad" as the grand prize. That makes it all worth while right there (smile), as this Toad could some day become a valued collectable (hehehe).

While Toad is in country I'll be helping out on the logistics of the group build, but Toad can, and does check in on the DSB often.

Any ideas about this are cetainly appreciated. Thanks.

I like that. I am in an OIF run lately, and something like that would be awesome. How about a start date later this year, say, September, October?

Ich liebe.

Hi all,
Would it be possible to extend the topic to cover OEF too? I have seen a neat picture of a NZ humvee in Afghanistan (NZ was lent it by the US) and I wouldn't mind giving it a go if I have time and it is suitable.

I'd be up to extending it to an OEF/OIF campaign. There are numerous ideas that could come from this and since many units served in both theatres of operation within a short timespan, it works too.

Fellow Pork Links

Toad-meister has set the following dates for the build.

Start date, July 2nd, 2005 (Ms. Toad's Birthday , end date January 13th, 2006, (the day Toad shipped out to Iraq).

As far as subjects, this is a Toad quote, "I think that the field is wide open as far as subjects,--- considering some of the stuff i've seen in country."

We are looking into the acquisition of the ceramic Toad for the Grand Prize award,--- Lloyd's of London will be contacted to price out the insurance on such a valued artifact once it has been acquired

Dont know if I'll be in on this one right now, maybe we could make a requirement that it has to have some sort of humor in it, you hogs are some pretty funny guys, dont know about the wolf pack though, (++) (++) (++)

Can the M1A2 DML kit be built into an M1 from OIF? BY this I mean without major surgery? Or I guess I could do a Humvee.

I would say no for a couple reasons:

M1s were not used in OIF. The earliest model of Abrams were M1A1s

You could just as easily get Tamiya's M1A2 kit and build the M1A1 option. I suggest Tamiya because of the quality and choices of versions to build.

Converting an M1A2 to an M1 would be extensive. M1A2 to M1A1 wouldn't be too hard, but would require a fair amount of work.

As for a HMMWV, there is nothing wrong with doing one. You can make one as easy as you want or can customize it for a good challenge. I just finished Tamiya's TOW version and highly recommend it. It is beautiful OOB, but can still have considerable AM parts added on, depending on one's preferences.

" I'm in " my next model was a OIF theme. I can do a Bradley, Abrams, Humvee or a Hemtt.

I was going to do something easy though to get out of this funk I've been in. I haven't had the nerve or get-go to finish my campaign.

Happy Modeling

Mary, I am in the final stages of doing my Bradley and it is great. Just OOB, it is awesome. I added Verlinden's Bradley Stowage set and you can't go wrong there either.

As for me, I have been wanting to super-detail a Italeri HEMMT (of course with a college budget, this will be super-expensive, thus I am really researching for best prices.

Did we ever set a start date?

Jeff, i believe the start date was set as July 2 and end date was Jan. 13. thats assuming nothing has changed.
Glad to hear that the Bradley is awesome. It will be one of the most involved kits i have attempted. But from the initial looks of it..I don't think i will have a problem with it(she says with fingers crossed)....
