I offered to take my wife on a cruze last year, and she asked if we could go to the Star Wars Celebration 3 convention instead. I was very excited about that, and find myself in Indy right now. My question is are there any good shops here in Indianapolis, IN.?

There is a Hobbytown up in Castleton that is pretty good.
Just a couple of blocks off the interstate, too so getting there isn't a huge hassle. I am not sure what their hours are so you may want to call first.

Hope this helps,

Welcome to Indy! Hope you enjoy the convention. As stated before there is a Hobbytown USA in Castleton on the north side. There is also one to the south in Greenwood. On the east side on Pendleton Pike there is a shop called Big Boy Hobbies. He has a pretty good selection of armor and figs and has pretty good prices. Also just south of downtown there is Tom Metzler Hobby center on S. Madison st. Hope this helps.

Just to refine what esc71 said. Metzlers Hobby on S Madison is where I do most of my hobby shopping. Good staff and a large selection. About once a month though, I head to the northeast side to Big Boy Hobbies. The guy there has the best prices, bar none in Indy. Better selection of armor that Metzlers, but Metzler has more aircraft and ships. The hobbytown are nothing special, just the same overpriced vanilla selection as any other hobbytown in the country.

With the loss of the only real hobby store in Muncie (about an hour from Indy) last March, I have to travel to Indy for almost all of my model supplies. (HobbyLobby has nothing I use except some basic paint). The Castleton store is great. Prices are a little high, but there is a decent supply. They seem to tailor more towards RC. The rest is split between railroading and military models. For the military models, aircraft makes up about 2/3, about 1/3 is armor/AFVs, and the rest is figures and accessories.

The reason you could not find it over Spring Break is it was not there. Gupta's closed down in March of 2004. Supposedly there is one near the AMA field, but I have yet to go there. My dad says it caters mainly to RC aircraft (being that is what the AMA field is used for). But directions is sparse in best. To my knowledge, Muncie (a city of 60,000+ plus another 20,000-30,000 in outlying areas) does not have a general modelling store at all. Someone sure could make a lot of money when they realize the possible capital here.

Good tips, everyone. I think I will have to drag the wife to Indy, again, to find the hobby shops I did not know existed. Funny how that happens here all the time. You try to help someone else out and end up learning something.
For the record Jeff I drove to Muncie a couple of times from Marion and Gupta Hobbies didn't impress me much. I don't know if you where ever in there but the store didn't do much for me.

We all need to plan a get together.
