Hello ladies and gentlemen:

I've been on the site a couple of days and Jackhammer suggested I write something about myself. . . rather like a 'compoooter "letter of introduction". I started building models in the 1960s so I have had some experience with plastic models. I received a degree in Fine Arts at the Univ. of Kansas, am a big "Kansas Jayhawk" fan; and until retirement two yrs. ago, was a newspaper graphic artist in the newsroom — at the Kansas City Star for 20 yrs. and then The Miami Herald for 15 1/2 yrs. (Thus my nickname, The Miami Jayhawk) I started freelancing on the Macintosh while in Miami for History Magazines on the American east coast and continued with that until retirement.

Until recently, I was mostly an aircraft builder with a few ships from time to time. I started painting figures (figs) about two years ago, "figuring" it would be a snap since I'm an artist, have a steady hand, have worked with acrylics, oils, etc. Wrong! Wow, I have so much to learn. Doing eyes on a 1:35th scale head definitely separates the figures painters from us wantabees. But it is fun! And I have made progress. Now I'm starting to get into small dioramas (dios) with a few figures. I live in a small place so I don't have much room to put large models projects. And I really enjoy model contests. I go to events all around the Heartland of the USA.

Well, this is way too much information. Zzzzzzzzz . . . puttin' people to sleep. But as I've read through the various posts from members, I realize this is a wonderful site. Everyone is so tactful in their remarks and offer so much encouragement to each other. And that is the way we should relate to each other, in my view.

Welcome to the Big A. Rick..Glad all my persuading you to join at the Des Moines show paid off..HEHE...Just kidding...Anyway...glad you did sign up. This site has so much to offer not just to the expeirenced modellor..but the novice as well. Once you get the feel for things around here..take a look at the Campaigns docket..There are several going on at any one time..and it gives you a chance to work on something of intrest..and the best part for me...there is a deadline..so i know if i commit..ill finish it..lol. Also..since your into figures...there is a Figure of the Month Contest...So...like i said b4...have a look around...if you need anything..just let us know...

Thanks everyone for such a warm welcome. Your comments have made me feel most welcome. I've told several of my fellow modelers here in Kansas City about the Big A and hopefully they will come on board as well.

Good wishes to you all

Rick, Welcome to the Clan, I'm willing to bet you'll like it here!

I'm in (OK, was in-undergoing an unwilling career change) the same biz as you, but for less time. I was a Graphic Designer for Ford & GM for 15 years or so...all Mac based. I could't draw a conclusion without my Mac.

Anyhow, welcome to the asylum! Happy to "meet" ya.
