Ghost Recon 2 PC Becoming A Ghost?
Written by John Callaham

Friday, 18 March 2005

In Ubi Soft's announcement Thursday on the list of games that they are scheduled to be released over the next 12 months, one previously announced game sticks out by its absence; the PC port of Ghost Recon 2.

The original game in the Tom Clancy branded military shooter series was actually released first on the PC way back in 2001 with two expansion packs released for that game later. Other console versions of the game for Xbox, PS2 and GameCube platforms among others were released much later.

However, when Ghost Recon 2 was first announced by Ubi Soft in April 2004, the press release clearly states the game would be coming for the PC in the holiday 2004 time period along with the console versions. Instead, Ubi Soft released the PS2 and Xbox versions of the game (in fact they were two entirely different games, not ports) in the fall of 2004. Just this week, Ubi Soft announced that the GameCube version of Ghost Recon 2 was shipping to stores (it is a port of the PS2 version).

Now, the extensive list of games scheduled by the publisher over the next 12 months does not mention Ghost Recon 2 at all (it does have an Xbox expansion pack for the game due to be released this summer). Furthermore, Ubi Soft has Ghost Recon 3 as set for release this fall and a PC version is listed as one of the many platforms it will appear on.

While online retailers have the PC version of Ghost Recon 2 listed on their web sites for pre-orders, even their release dates for the game vary wildly. GameStop.com has a May 3 release date while both EBGames.com and Chipbits.com (owned by the theglobe.com, owners of Computer Games Magazine) have June 15 as a release date. Amazon.com has a Aug. 21 release date for the game and oddly enough their listing for Ghost Recon 2 adds a new subtitle, Stonewall.

Ironically, that new subtitle also describes the reaction by Ubi Soft about the status of Ghost Recon 2 for the PC. Computer Games Magazine contacted the game's PR rep and he stated, "Yesterday’s press release focused on new titles for 05-06, rather than on different platform versions of already-released titles – so no GR2 PC mention. Unfortunately, I don’t have any further details about the game at this time – I’m still waiting for confirmation of specific features and when the game might ship." It seems only time will tell if PC hard drives will ever contain Ghost Recon 2 but we will report if anything changes.

I didn't particularly care for Ghost Recon on XB. Maps seemed too small for online play. You wouls spawn right in view of badguys and don't stand a chance
