Hey guys

I have a question that may sound dumb but then I again it is me asking. I was wondering if a tank regiment in WW2 would have any infantry attached to it who are part of the same reg or would they always be from an infantry regiment. I was wondering just so when I complete my Ont tank reg dio sometime this summer I would have my markings on my troops correct.

Thanks
Paul

They are always from an infantry regiment. There were no combat infantry integral to the armoured regiments. If the armoured unit is part of one of the armoured divisions, the accompanying infantry are usually from the division's motorised regiment. The infantry from the infantry brigade were generally used to break open the hole that the motorised regiment and the armoured regiments poured through (that was the plan, anyway). For corps level tank regiments (like the Ontarios) they were used to support regular infantry division regiments in their assaults, a subtly different activity.

The motorised regiments were meant to support the armour and protect it during the armour's attack. The army tank brigade regiments were meant to support the infantry in the infantry's attack.

Hi Hasty P
This may be an equally stupid answer, but if it is an 43-45 italian setting wouldn't almost any first division troops be ok? WIthout a specific date for your dio I am pretty sure you could get away with most of the cdn inf regiments in Italy, including the motorized ones. If you have a specific battle or operation in mind you would have to match it up, using a little research. Have you read the D-day dogers? Good luck!

Actually for most of 1943 the 1st Armoured Brigade did not support Canadian troops. Trying to remember, but I think the first commander of the Brigade had not gotten along with Chris Volkes, or Volkes didn't like how the Brigade supported his division the first few times, something like that. The result was that he didn't want the Candian Brigade supporting him and usually had British tank regiments in support. Which was apparently was fine by Monty because the 1st soon turned out to be a crackerjack brigade and Monty didn't mind having the support to himself. It was only later, by Ortona, that the 1st was regularly supporting 1st Cdn Inf Div.
