Hi
Unfortunately no. It has been replaced by the Withings I think or something like it. I will ask my buddy in the Tiffies here in Potch if they have some pics. Why planning to build one?

A fellow Armorama'rer from Scotland by the name of
barv contacted me asking about SA recovery vehicles. The only vehicle I came across was the Gemsbok, while looking through the pictures of
"The Covert War"
in the CNA yesterday.
He's a really friendly guy, so if you find any pics or reference material PM or mail him. He'll be very grateful for any help.

I will try. The Gemsbok is bit of a bugger as it wasn't really used by the SADF. It is a Casspir chasis on which a mine protected cab and load bed was mounted. The Police were the main users so it will be difficult.

Hi Guys
Just some info on the recovery vehicles question.
The GEMSBOK was never a SANDF recovery vehicle, it was developed for the SAP for use in in the former SWA. It is based on the chassis and mechanicals of the CASPPIR. The SAP had essentially three types of recovery vehicles, the GEMSBOK, the ALBATROSS and the STERK HANS that they deployed during the border conflict, all of them mine resistant.
I do have some pics if you like.

Hi,
A good book, if you can find it is "Taming the Landmine" by Peter Stiff. Published by Galago Publishing ( Pty ) Ltd. ISBN 0 947020 04 7
As far as I know the SADF used the Samil 50 Kwêvoel Recovery a lot. The same Kwêvoel was used as tankers, ambulances etc.
If you want to I can scan pic's from the book as I don't know if teh publishers still exsist.
Regards,
Tappie

Hi all,
The Gemsbok was a Casspir variant and used as recovery by both the SAP and SADF.
The Samil 50 Kwêvoël Recovery was solely used by the SADF.

Steve & Rudi
IIRC the Ops order for recovery vehicles was:
Samil / Kwêvoël 50
Samil / Kwêvoël 100
Withings -White Stallion (Same chassis & cab as the Bateleur not the Samil 100) – This handled the Rooikat as well, don’t know if this has changed.
Ratel Recovery
Olifant ARV (There used to be a MAN 8X8 as well- phased out now) – Don’t know whether the new Mk1B recovery has been incorporated yet.
From
http://samil.armour.co.za/:
Kwêvoël 50 Recovery

Kwêvoël 100 Recovery

Steve / Eric,
I found this site which may be of interest:
SADID Here's a Kwevoel:
Hope this helps....
Will keep on looking for pics of the Ratel recovery vehicle, it has definitely been mentioned in alot of the military sites... pictures appears somewhat ellusive though...

Hi Steve,
Are you looking for historical and technical data on the vehicle? I've got issues 2 -3 of VEG (issue 1 is a poster edition). I'll try get the scanner hooked up this weekend and send you the Centurian articles... After speaking to Pierre, I understand that the ARV version of the beastie should feature in approxiamately issue 9... which makes that next year some time. Is he wanting to put your modeling article in the same issue? That would be brilliant!
Coming back to your original question... I guess Pierre would probably be the best person to ask for more info... although I suppose he'll be reluctant to give it up..
