That's a fun kit to do, although it does take some work. My biggest disappointment with it was that the cab is just one solid block of resin. I would have loved trying to do an interior but it's solid.
The other disappointment was with the "spade" on the back. It comes molded solid in the raised position. I'm not one to leave "well enough alone", so I got a hold of the TM to see how it's put together, and was able to cut the part into two pieces and fix it so it actually raises and lowers like the real one. When you get to it, if that's something you want to try, let me know and I can take some photos to give you an idea where all the "bits" go.
(Now if somebody would just make an engine for the M107/M110 family like they did for the M108/M109 family!)

rebelsoldier,
There is a M578 at the Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry in Austin if you need references. I've got a few pictures of it.

No problem!

I'm one who enjoys building functionality into moving parts, (like hatches, doors, etc), but not everyone does. Since I'm an engineer in my day job, that sort of "problem solving" is something I like to figure out.
I just couldn't look at that spade all folded up in the stowed position, I just HAD to make it work, but that's just me. If it is something you want to do (and it does involve using a razor saw to cut the two pieces in half!) once you get the kit and look at it, just let me know and I'll be happy to help with photos etc.

Have free sketches that I used to scratch build this one. Measurments from exhibit in REME Museum at Bordon Hants. Old model made when on duty tour so bit rough round the edges-----the "clam-shell " spade actually opens and deploys under rear wheel--(as it should).
Drop me a line ,

Not very feasible. You'd make a lot of nasty resin dust which should be avoided and it would be very hard to make a straight wall.
I'd recommend using the resin part as a guide to scratch the cab in styrene.

Having done this kit also I totally agree, trying to hollow that big block of resin would be a nightmare. I never considered using it as a guide to scratch build, but that sounds very doable in retrospect.
When I finish all the kits in my stash, I'll probably go back and to that. :-)

Glad to know I'm not the only one who did that. I'm guessing that since it was the same kit, you had to cut it and scratch build the links and hinges etc as well?
It was a challange but I liked the results.
