I picked up a set of 1/72 scale photoetched Marsden Matting (aka pierced steel planking or PSP) to use as a load in my DUKW. Now the PE parts are made in a copper colored material similar to Verlinden PE products.

What color should I make the PSP? I searched some photographs and find a lot of pictures of old matting that is now a deep brown rust color similar to manhole covers or sewer grates.

Does anyone know what color the PSP was when new or unused? Was it painted OD or black, was it already deep rust brown?

I'm leaning towards the idea that even though this stuff was new, solid steel material like that would take on a rough metal rust appearance rather quickly just during the transportation process from being on a train, sitting on the dock, on board ship, etc.

Sabot,
Fresh PSP mat is painted OD or field green when new. The paint is not of superoir quality, its more of a surface coat to inhibit rust, but deteriates quickly. Todd
