Steve, it must have been very interesting to be involved with such development, I was in the Dutch Army in 89-90, during the fall of the Berlin wall and the changing (or rather diminishing) treath from 'the hordes'. Although we were still training with such a senario in mind, even our instructors noted that most of what we practised for would in all probability never happen. All the talk was about the future creation of a 'new' Army, centered around the 'rapid deployment' (i.e. air mobile) concept.
As I have taken this thread off topic for a minute already, as an aside, it is interesting to note that in the centuries of war in Europe, where alliances shifted with every war, the basic shape of the main countries has not changed that much. Some smaller kingdoms etc have merged into larger countries, but in all no one country has ever invaded another and kept it permanently 'annexed'. I think that only in the last 60 years we have finally learned from history. Well in Western Europe anyway. Makes you wonder if we will ever learn on a global scale....
