Pastels are on sale at Hobby lobby for 1/2 off picked up a set yesterday. 36 colors for $7.50 yes both kinds oil and regular noticed that the oil ones were mostly all gone. But they do have a couple of more sets that sell for $5.00 one is grays and blacks and the other earth tones think I will snatch them up today. can never have to many pastels laying around. Does anybody use them any more kind of easy way to apply a little weathering that can be removed if not the right effect. then sealed with dullcoat to keep the finger prints down.

Micheals also has a set of 24 chalks on sale also until thru Sat. Some of the colors aren't that practical for armor but quite a few are. It was about $7.50 I recall. I have never used pastels before but I am excited to try them out.

I really like using pastels. They're great for around gun muzzles and exhausts. Of course, they can be used to recreate a dusty look to a model. I also like to use pastels to make rust streaks running down from bolt heads, etc. on some tanks. An interesting way to make dusty looking wheels is to spray the wheels a dust colour and then add black pastel dust. This is easier than having to paint the rubber black . Lately, I've been experimenting with pastel washes on my tracks and I plan on mixing pastels and maybe some sand with oil paints for mud on another project. They can be used for a lot of things and you really don't need to buy too many. They can even be mixed somewhat.

I use some of the green shades to "sun-fade" green camouflage colors on armor. The tans & browns can also be used to fade those shades of camouflage colors

I spray dullcote over the dark colours that I use for powder residue and rust streaks, but the light dust just goes on at the end with no dullcote.
