OK, you guys that have Taps. When I was a kid in California, there was no cable yet and we had a thing called ONTV. You payed for a membership and you got this funkie box that sat atop your TV set and it ws basically a movie channel. (used to sneak up at night to watch the soft adult flicks that they showed, but that is a different subject! :-) )

Anyway, I remember watching Taps over and over. The question is, it still being one of my alltime favs, did it make any of you want to go to military school? I know I did!! It actually inspired me to join the Marine Corps Devil Pups!!

That made me join the Drill team in my High School ROTC program and by my Senior year, I made Drll team XO. And now, 12+ years in the Army and still going strong!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm older than some of you so I still have VHS

Das Boot
Saving Private Ryan (VHS)
The Patriot
Gettysburg (VHS)
Glory (VHS)
Master and Commander
Memphis Belle (VHS)
A Bridge Too Far
Tora, tora, tora
Twelve O’clock High
Sink the Bismarck
The Longest Day
The Great Escape
Kelly’s Heroes (VHS)
Raid on Rommel
Some cheapie DVD that has three movies on it but only We Dive at Dawn plays.
Top Gun (VHS)

Steve, I certainly remember ONTV. That was back in the day when a there was VHS and Beta. My friend got the first VHS machine I ever saw. Paid about $1000 for it. It had a wired "remote" that allowed you to just pause the tape, to edit out commercials. The timer would allow you to have it turn on, switch to a channel, and start recording. Nothing else. No off or anything, it just recorded until you ran out of tape.

When I first saw TAPS I was in NJROTC in high school. I saw a lot of my friends in some of the characters in that movie. Especially Tom Cruise, the commander of the drill team. He was exactly like our drill team commander.

Frank, The Man who would be King, GREAT MOVIE. I keep wanting to get it on DVD but I saw it once at Wal-Mart for $8.99 and can't bring myself to pay more than twice that at media play or someplace. I also haven't broken down and bought any DVDs on ebay.

Hey Rodger,
Yeah, great memories. I too was in JR. ROTC.

My older brother had one of the first VCR's also. It too had the wired remote and it was huge!! It was also top loading for the cassettes. A dinosaur now but it was heaven then to go to his house on the weekends and stay up all night watching movies!

I need to update my list. I forgot another that I have. The Big Red One.

ONTV. Man we are dating ourselves. If I recall that was the first real attempt at premium pay tv. Unlike cable tv today it was still through the airwaves but you had to have a special box to descramble it.

I remember on Halloween when they showed Halloween, Magic and the Amityville Horror trio. It was great watching unedited movies on tv in your own home!!!

Oh good lord, I have over 3500 DVD's and I would think at least 300+ of them are war flicks including epic battle flicks like Henry V, Braveheart, Troy, I'd say at least a 150 or more that are placed in the civil war to present. Then on top of that I have at least 100 disc of documentaries on warfare mostly WWII. However I'd say my top five flicks would be Full Metal Jacket, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryne, Patton and The Longest Day ...

You guys and gals must be reading my mind or something (short story that it is :-)).
I decided last week I'm going to start collecting all the war flicks I can find on DVD,especially all those old WWII films with John Wayne and the like. This is a great way to build a master list so I know what to look for when I go shopping! Keep those titles coming!

Want good start of war films CHEAP? Check this out, not the top end films in the best quality but they are CHEAP. Over half are documentries but they are good too.

50 movie war classic collection

You can find it in eBay or Best Buys however I got mine at Big Lots a closeout store and paid $14 for it ... hard to beat that.
