Well I was going to go to work today but along the way I found this. A Kentucky Department of Transportation Snow Plow off in a ditch. At the point I decided no job was worth dying for nor getting stuck in a ditch. I think the county I live in only has two snow plows and here is one of them ... i'm guess the other is off in a ditch elsewhere in the county.

We have deep ditches to deal with the heavy rains we get but when they are full of snow they can be a little hard to find until it's to late. Now I know all you northern people are use to it and have the equipment for it, but this is the SOUTH this is more snow than we get in a entire decade. Last year we got about 1/2" of snow. (a little over 1 cm) That is what we are use too. I'll take the 6" rain in a afternoon or the 110F heat with 100% humidity any day. Well I hope every one has a VERY HAPPY AND SAFE CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS!!

Hey Dave, I just wish you could send a few inches down here to Atlanta. I know I'm in the minority but I'd love to see it.

Happy Holidays,
Mike (:-)

I didn't know y'all had plows down there! That looks like about 2 inches of snow. Hope y'all remember this when y'all here Bing singing about his "White Christmas" and all those others singing about "Winter Wonderland" and "Let It Snow!"
Just hole up at home, have yourself a hot toddy (okay, a nice shot of Maker's Mark) and do some holiday
All y'all dealing with snow that you're not used to, please be safe!

Hi I would have to say that this guy's boss isn't none too happy with him today. But in all seriousness the ruuning one of these snow plows has to be a whole lot harder than it would seem at first. You're basically driving in the blind, so to speak, and trying to judge where the edge of the road is by the lay of the roadbed, which you can't see either. I believe that this scene definitely gave you the right advice.

Take care, Sgirty

The plows are mainly used to move mud out of the road after floods. LOL
2" I can deal with .... nope we got 16" that is the most snow we have gotten since I think '77 somewhere in there. We have drifts that are about 4 and 5 feet. Just don'rt get that stuff here.

Dave

PS Makers Mark ... You got that right! Nothing better that is sopme GOOD STUFF. I will not say how many bottle I have in the wet bar. :-)

I lived in Kentucky for 4 years. We got snow several times ayear every year, so unless something has drastically changed this should be no big thing. Now I live in Dallas, we get snow that sticks once every couple of years, we don't have anything to clear roads, so have a little melt, add a 20-30 mph wind and you have good times on the highway. Hoo= boy you should see all the wrecks most of which are 4 wheel drive SUV's. It seems the locals are under some impression that 4 wheel drives are immune to ice. The other side of the equation is the chicken-itzas who hit their brakes and spin their way to excitement

Blaster,
I live in Far Southwest Kentucky which rarely gets more than a inch or two a year total on a average year. We get either ice or rain, even living in KY you should know 16" is not normal for here.

I second that.....KY gets 1 to 2 inches a year in most of the state and that is not every year so 16 inches should have most of SW KY shut down. I lived in Louisville for several years growing up and it would be shut down after an 1 or 2 inches. Then my family moved to N. KY, (Cincy, OH area)where they have lots of snow removal equipment, and they have 10 inches right now...but this happened several times while I lived there. Of Course I live in Memphis, TN and we got dumped on with Sleet and snow. Now this is unusual! The only way the streets are getting clear here is when it warms up....

Yep Louisville is about 250 from here and Covington Cincy Area is about 350+ miles from here I'm closer to Memphis than Louisville. I only live about 10 miles from the Mississippi River. and yes this end of the state is closed down. I've seen them cancel schools over the treat of flurries and that is no joke.

That the weather over here and where you are at, weather said it is going to get into the 50's (F) this week and right now it's a smokin' 7F outside. The only way the roads will clear where I live is the thaw. Thay have even cancelled the mail delivery out here, so much for that nor rain, nor sleet, nor snow crap the post office says huh?

I used to love the rare snow that we get here in Alabama. Then we had the "blizzard" of '93. 18 inches...........I got stuck at work for three days. We pulled so many idiots out of ditches that three days. Ever since, I hate snow. I prefer winter as a season, but detest the white stuff.

I missed that storm in the southern part of Ohio by a few hours I drive long haul truck and spent the night off of exit 29 on I-75 About 20 miles north of Cinncinatti,Ohio
I got up around 0330 that day and at first it was raining, but then it turned into snow I just grabbed some coffee and got out of the area asap headed due south into Georgia that day
I am in Pennsylvania now at my Mom's house for Christmas If it snowede a few hours earlier I probably would still be in that area

It is no fun driving an 18 wheeler in the snow

Yep I saw quite a few 18 wheelers having more than a little trouble. I drive a big ol 4X4 and I had no problem getting around it's just all those other idiot out there you have to watch out for! Some of the people down here shouldn't drive on a warm, dry sunny day better yet when there is snow all over the road. I was going to go into the store (Wal-Mart) which I hate and would rather take a beating than to go in there, but it's the only thing open around here today. I got to the store and saw the parking lot jammed packed with cars park in all directions and said "Forget it ... there is nothing I need that bad today." I finally found a Mom and Pop store open and did my business there, which is what I'd rather do anyway.

Well the good news is that picture at the top I took made the local papers ... the bad news is I didn't make any money off of it not even a free paper. LOL oh well I guess it's all about the honor.

Hey Dave:

Am I the only one who noticed they had no chains on the drive and front wheels?

Chains are a must if you're gonna do anything serious on an unplowed road, especially if the snow gets packed or has melted/frozen snow underneath (ice).

Like-duuuuuuuhhhhhhh

Tom

True, but tire chains are illegal here, as well as studded tires. You only put them on your car, truck, moped etc ... if you want a BIG ticket. They claim they damage the roads. Who am I to argue with government, they know everything .. right? .... Right.

Now it doesn't matter if you have only one headlight, no breaklights, and the trunk tied down with duct tape ... that's ok!
