Today marks the 60th Anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Bulge. It is a day for me to remember the vets who are still with us, and the ones who have passed on either in battle or through the passage of time.. (On both sides)
I listen to Rush Limbaugh daily and he had a 79 year old Bulge vet call in and the last thing that he said was "if I told mey C.O that I wasn't going up against a tank with an unarmored jeep I would have been court martialed!"
Kind of shows you how times have changed a bit eh?
He also stated that he was held hostage for 3 months after the war ended by... the RUSSIANS!! He said he was also held by the Germans as a POW before being released and stopped by the Russians. He stated that the Germans treated him well but, in his words and I quote, "the Russians were mean Bast*rds!"
Made me chuckle a bit.
Rush asked him how his health was and he explained that he is disabled and can barely walk, but he was above ground! Made my day with his positive outlook!
So, I ask you to stop and remember the men on both sides today who fought and died in this pivotal battle that we hold in such high regard, for obvious reasons. It offers us lots of modelling oppurtunities, but beyond that, let's take a moment to remember.

Thanks for reminding us.
The statement of the Bulge vet - "That I'm above ground" made me think.
Right now WWII vets on the average are reaching their mid to late 80's.
WWI vet are in their mid to late 90's. In 10 years there probably will be no living person who actually fought in the "War to End All Wars."
In 20 years there will probably be few to none who fought in the Second World War. No one who was actually at:
Pearl Harbor
Midway
Tarawa
Iwo Jima
Normandy
Hurtgen Forest
Bastogne
Remagen
Bergen-Belsin
Auswitz
Dachau
That is why it is so important to talk to these men and women, to get their stories, to learn their history and be able to pass that onto future generations.
The Band of Brothers and others have done that. Not only told the story, but got the story straight from those who lived it.
