But on this same date another dramatic event took place.
On this same date a V2 rocket hit the Rex cinema complex in the centre of Antwerp. The impact was during a movie feature. The result was disasterous... 596 civilians, British, Canadian and US soldiers perished.
Although Antwerp suffered the worst of the v-attacks, none of the other hits had such a high toll in human lives.
Some more facts: 4000+ V1 and V2 impacted in the Antwerp region with only 10% hitting the targeted port area, thus causing minimal damage to the port facilities. Luckyly due to the efforts of General Armstrong and his AA-troops also only 10% of the 20.000 V1's aimed at Antwerp reached it's target. Sadly V2's couldn't be intercepted.
So take a moment to remember those who suffered in this dramatic event and the valiant defenders of the AA-batteries who helped spare the vital supply artery.
