I'm trying to help a freind find a good Spyware program for her kid's Dell. I use AdAware, but I'm not really up on what else is out there. I would appreciate any info on prices, effectiveness, ease of use, etc., etc. Thanx in advance.

adaware se personal is a very good freeware version.
There is also Seach and Destroy - freeware
I use spysweeper - free 30 days, then subscription.
WIth the 1st 2 you get a very nice combination that will take care of you. You may need to do individual searches every once in a while for very selective spyware.
All are easy to use and install. S&D has an advanced mode that is more useful (to me). It shows what is starting up when windows does and that is where I find myself going when I use that software. We use adaware and S&D at work.

Hey Art,
A combination of two free Spyware sweepers generally can do the job of one pay subscription one.
Like slodder said, Spy Sweeper (Editor's Choice program by PC Magazine) is good and they have a basic free one that cleans up well and is easy to use. I use this and Spybot in tandem (one after the other) and seem to be OK in terms of Spyware.
Get each one at the following links

Spybot

adaware se personal & Norton - so far the tandem has kept my pc bullet-proof. I find that using Mozilla Firefox instead of Microsoft's i.e. can also help

how can two free spyware sweeper programs do the job of the full version IF they are the same program?
Are Spybot and Spy Sweeper made by the same people? I thought Spy Sweeper was made by Webroot and Spybot was made by PepiMK.
Since the definitions are updated seperately, you have a good chance of one catching spyware that the other may have missed or not have the definitions for.
For those of us that don't have the extra $30 to spend on anti-spyware software, this works out pretty good.
Also, using a Mozilla browser (FireFox, Opera, etc.) definitely helps fight the fight.

I also use the yahoo toolbar with anti-spy and popup blocker works well to. Also try a program call "hijack this". Good on this cyber war on spyware and pop-ups.
