Ladies and Gentlemen:

The first Malaysian Scale Modelling Society is being setup now in KL. The society will be recruiting for members once it has obtain the necessary documentation from the Registrar of Societies. If you guys and gals are interested, please let me know.

In the mean time, do provide some feedbacks on how the society can serve and promote scale modelling in Malaysia.

A warm welcome to the Community Forum Argrillion and a great entrance too by being the bearer of promising news.

Perhaps you could introduce yourself a bit more to the gang here. A society for modellers would definitely go a long way in generating interest in the country and hopefully to cheaper prices and wider ranges of products if nothing else. No offense to the Gundam guys but it would be nice to see other scale modelling taking a front seat in this country.

I'm sure you can recruit a fair number of members here.

Hello Everyone:

To answer Sil's question, the modelling society is targetted to open for members before the end of first quarter (QTR) 2005. Presently, there is a pro tem committee working on the official papers to the get society registered in Malaysia.

In the spirit of promoting scale modelling in Malaysia, there are some plans drawn up. One of them would be to organize a scale modelling competition due before end 2nd QTR 2005.

Obviously, like Sil said, we can't be sitting around. Hence, we need ideas to promote scale modelling. Remember, if the Malaysian scale modelling population is small, we can't be expecting our local retailers to offer competitive and wider variety of models (Ooops! Sorry Beachbum, hate to drop the bomb on your hopes). Hmm! Who is the market population for the Gundam then?

While waiting for the society to open its doors, I suggest that we make Teh-Tarik session into reality. I will suggest to the society that Armorama-Malaysia Community gets a table in the June 2005 exhibition/competition such that we have an objective to work on. What say you?

In the mean time, if anyone has any feedbacks/suggestions for the society, you can e-mail me or post it in this forum for discussion. Thanks in advance everyone. We need your support to make the society materialise.

I agree with that....there is the need to propagate scale modelling among Malaysians and change the distorted perspective that we play with the models once completed! I know many people who enjoy the miniature stuff but are reluctant to do it themselves.

I think the time is right to set-up and the society and introduce society to 'real' modeling.

Yeah right Silantra. As far as the home ministry and the rest of my family is concerned its still toys, just more expensive toys for the "big boys". You know what they say, "The only difference between boys and men is the cost of their toys".

Models are TOYS! Now that is a perception we gotto to change. Models are ART PIECES! And there is at least an art school in KL working with these so-called Model Toys. Last year, I spent quite some time in Gundam exhibition/competition in Sg Wang Plaza (around this ime ofthe year). Among the competitiors, I found some entries coming from art schools!

Fortunately, my family is quite supportive with my scale modelling. As long as I balance my time with family, modelling and work , I have harmony.

Remember: "Adults are kids just they know how to behave."

So aah, when is the next Big Boys Toys exhibition coming to town?

Welcome to Armorama, this is a great place to get started or ask questions. How about a little background? What kind of models or era do you build? If you need any help dont be afraid to ask

Hi everyone,

I live in Shah Alam.

Not good at all in painting, don't even own an airbrush...yet.

Wondering if there's any workshops available in teaching newbies how to get the painting right. I know there are some classes in Singapore, but then they have a very well developed modelling culture.

I am mainly into the 1/35 scale tanks, and some 1/48 WWII fighters.

Anyway i can find out what each other's interest are in?

Btw, where do you guys usually buy your kits from? Due to the import duties (which i think are around 20%), i think it's much cheaper getting them from eBay, especially sellers from Hong Kong right?

Hello J:

There are modelling workshops in KL. These workshops are organized by the founders of the Scale Modelling Society. As far I can remember, the workshops are held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month between 1300-1500 hours at Hobby HQ, City Square. All levels including YOU are welcome. BTW, I m usually there on the 1st Saturdays.

The duties for "plastic" items are 30+10% because locally we produced plastic from the O&G industry. I must agree kit prices in Hong Kong may be competitive but not when we have those Mega Sales in MH. In a weeks time, I am thinking of flying in Morser Karl Gerat on railway carrier and Hotchkiss H39 for the modelling exhibition next year.

I was in MH Singapore last month and they had 50% off the Moser. That 50% is on top of they already lower retail price they have in Sing compared to Malaysia.

Those like the Tamiya Abrams had a normal selling price of S$49.90, but with 20% off, it's S$39.90. Too bad i did not get it then.

Not only that some 1/32 scale fighters were up to 70% off. 2 reasons held me back from getting it...1)The customs, since i drove to Sing 2)My girlfrend, but i figured the customs is still the main problem.

They will not see the actual value of the kit, more of the size.

Even the Leopold was 50% off. That's serious savings.

Bringing kits like Morser Karl (Trumpeter version) fm Singapore would attract lots of Customs. I got taxed for bringing into Malaysia a X'mas tree back a few X'mas ago.

Boy! Sure like to be in Singapore now to do some X'mas shopping with Target_J's news. Just wondering, does anyone know whether the AFTA 2005 would reduce model prices in Malaysia?

So Target_J, you will be coming by the workshop soon?

I think with AFTA, kits from China should have at least some form of tax exemption. There should be a reduction in the Import Duties, but not sure about the sales tax though. As for Tamiya, does anyone know if Japan is joining AFTA?

I will definitely be dropping by the workshop. I wasn't aware that there's a hobby shop in City Square.

Besides MH and the one in City Square, where else can we find hobby shops in the KL area? I know there used to be one in 1Utama, but that has since closed down. Bryan Ryan used to carry some kits but no longer do so.

There's also one near Ultimate Toys in 1 Utama that carries some kits, and XL shop carries Dragon kits as well. Any others?

Too lazy to go to the model shops thread!

There is one toy shop at Shah Alam Mall (can't remember its current name), they stock a small selection of Academy models.
