I just found this today:
HP has issued a notice concerning some of their recently released notebook computers. Some of the memory modules supplied with these computers may require replacement.
HP provides a utility that will check your notebook memory and order replacement memory if required. You can all the info at this site:
HP Memory Module Replacement Program (US-EN)

The deadline for replacement claims is 31 December 2004.

Just thought I'd mention this in case there are any other HP users who, like me had not heard about this.

And additional information:
Everyone who sends the faulty memory module back to HP (free of charge in a prepaid envelope provided by HP) after ordering a new one using the tool mentioned above will receive a 32MB USB Flash memory.

Thanks for the heads-up Ed. I own an HP notebook but mine wasn't on the list fortunately.
