well, i think a great thing for you to start out with is dry brushing. Washing is a little more advanced. When you drybrush you take your paintbrush dip it in the paint of your desire, wipe off most of the paint on the tips on a paper towel until you can hardly see the paint(trust me on if you put a light color over a dark with drybrushing youll see it no matter what) then apply it litely to the top of the crevices of your figure/tank.

a wash is where you take thinner and mix it with paint to blend in the colors. It seems harder than it sounds. If you are not careful you can totally ruin your painting. Here is a great site for washing, drybrushing, and everything. http://www.naritafamily.com/howto/Tiger1/photo_frame.htm
