A Royal Navy sailor has been officially recognised as a Satanist and allowed to practise rituals on board ship.

Naval technician Christopher Cranmer, 24, from Edinburgh, has been in the Navy for four years and a practising Satanist for nine years.

He has recently returned from a tour in the Gulf and Indian Ocean on HMS Cumberland, during which his beliefs were officially recognised by his commanding officer.

A spokesman for the Royal Navy said: "We are an equal opportunities employer and we don't stop anybody from having their own religious values.

"Wherever practical, reasonable requests for time and facilities that do not impact on operational effectiveness or the welfare of other personnel are met."

Mr Hand told The Sunday Telegraph he realised he was a Satanist after reading a copy of the Satanic Bible - written by Church of Satan founder Anton Szandor LaVey.

He said: "I didn't want to feel I couldn't get out my Satanic Bible and relax in bed. I didn't want to bite my tongue any more when dealing with idiots."

The church promotes Nine Satanic Statements, including indulgence instead of abstinence and vengeance instead of turning the other cheek.

Former Tory minister Ann Widdecombe condemned the decision.

She said: "Satanism is wrong. What they believe and do in their own home is one thing, what they do at work is the business of their employer.

"The Navy should not permit Satanist practices on board its ships."

Seems to me the more fuss made about it the more it would be legitimized. Let him practice all he wants, and it will probably go away. Make a big to do about it and more people will come out of the closet.

I have been before been considered one of them, but I no longer feel the same way due that I disagree with their "rituals". Still, I feel the need to explain what Satanism is all about, because it seems that people are still ignorant of the LaVey Satanism and have the stereotype of hollywood's representation of Satanism.

Contrary to popular belief, Satanists don't worship devils, they don't even believe in the existence of God or Satan. Satanism is not a religion, it is a philosophy that inspired and developed from the philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche and David Hume. Anton Szandor LaVey. states,
"we don’t need a lot of followers; we need more leaders in society in general and Satanism is a philosophy of leaders. Satanists find more strength in images of defiance, fortitude against all odds and self-determination"

So why is it called Satanism when they don't believe in Satan? After discovering what Satanism really is people usually think, “You know, everything you say makes a lot of sense. But that name, ‘Satan’, is a real turn-off for people. Why don’t you just call it ‘Humanism’ or something—you’d get a lot more followers.” don't let the name influence your opinion about them.

Satanism has freaked out of people, and Satanists have been discriminated because of their beliefs, which is against the law. LaVey responds that. " In recent years, we’ve wasted far too much time explaining that Satanism has nothing to do with kidnapping, drug abuse, child molestation, animal or child sacrifice, or any number of other acts that idiots, hysterics or opportunists would like to credit us with. Satanism is a life-loving, rational philosophy that millions of people adhere to"

Ok, just a little explanation of what Satanism is, and I hope you guys are not so quick to judge as stupid what you do not know.

Dragonslain,

The "Hollywood" portrayal of Satanism pretty much started with Anton LeVay, if I recall correctly. His claim to fame was playing Satan in "Rosemary's Baby." (That is him as Satan in the short nightmare rape scene.) That pretty much got the whole Hollywood Satanist ball rolling. Got the cash rolling in too. Anton is dead, BTW, died in 1997.

As far as the Royal Navy letting this guy go his own way, well, I'm all for that. As long as it doesn't interfere with his duties, I say carry on. Some one who knows more about it can weigh in but I think Satanism has been recognised by the US Army for some time.

Shaun

After reading what dragonslain said and doing some research myself, satanism isnt such a bad thing, its just that is has a bad sound to it.
Its just that people judge too quickly.

I was a student of Philosophy and Theology while in college many years ago, and I think that basically, people have been judged for their religious beliefs since the dawn of time...I was raised in a Catholic family, studied Dogma of all types of Religion, but I no longer am a practicing Catholic for many good reasons that I will not go into here on this forum...But I am still a believer in one great Creator...Religion is a touchy subject, just like Politics, everyone has their own right to choose what they believe in, & I don't think that it is stupidity or ignorance that causes one to believe in one or another, but remember, basic teachings of "good or evil " can sway an opinion to the right or left...So essentially, I guess it's all about what you choose to believe in, and if it makes you happy, by all means stick to it....Religion, like any other subject, should be studied and understood fully before truly "believing" in it....Just my two cents...
