Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes.I just returned from a two week holiday in Cyprus, while there we visited a city called Famagusta, this city was emptied when the Turkish army invaded northern cyprus in 1974 the inhabitants were given two hours to leave, this is a large city high rise buildings hotels and suberbs in the sixties and seventies it was the resort of the jet set now its totally empty. It depressed me and the wife to see it, shops with all the stock still there a car showroom with brand new RollsRoyces never been driven just sitting there rotting we were shown a house the dinner still on the table kids toys on the floor man it was freaky and sad. its part of the U.N. buffer zone now but the border has been relaxed and tourists can visit it under strict controls first time ive been on an tourist trip with ak47's pointed at my butt.I dont want to talk about the politics because I dont know anything about it but I just thought i would tell you of the experience

hi John,
Believing you may think i can not be neutral or objective on this subject as a Turk,I can tell you to use the word '' gazi magosa'' when doing searchs on this.
I also dont want to talk the political part of the subject because in Turkish history it is not called an invasion but is called as 1974 cyprus peace operation. I know some about the historical part of it and can share with you if you want. Lately I am glad to see both sides in Cyprus are closer for solutions and I believe Magosa will be more alive in future.

Engin, I would be pleased to hear more of the history of this affair, as I was staying in Protaras which is in the Greek area I could only find out from their point of view.As you say things are getting better, i was at a friends wedding in Aiga Nappa he was a Greek Cypriot his wife was English and the two familes we sat with at the reception were Turkish cypriot, so maybe there is hope with the young.

Dear friends,
Best i can do for you is to show you some links about Cyprus, after you have some info on the subject and if you will have any questions in mind,i can try to answer your questions in my limits.... but to tell you my personal opinion; I believe Cyprus problem must be solved between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots not Turkey-Greece or any other country under the name of UN. I visited Cyprus many times and I met so many people from both sides telling that they want close relations with the other side but some political games dont let them do this.
History of Cyprus
Greek cypriots point of view
Turkish cypriots point of view

both sides also have some fanatic websites but thinking they are out of realism ;i will not show you this part of the Cyprus problem.

best regards

John,
I am so glad and happy to say there is more than hope in the relations of Greeks,Turks,Turkish and Greek Cypriots in late days. I absolutely believe the problem is not the people,it is politics but unfortunately politics rules the world, not people.
