My girl and I are planning to get an Academy Humvee which we will modify (slightly) into a civilian 4-door version (she likes to color it white with black trim).

I've only seen one Academy Humvee kit but it seems that they only included the bottom part of the engine. There's no detail whatsoever under the hood If you want to open it up. Since aftermarket parts are very rare here, scratchbuilding is the only way to go. Is this project feasible? I'm just thinking out loud here and I need advice from you guys. Sabot has excellent pics from his motorpool and that inspired me to try. This project has no definite time frame so it's not a problem if it takes a year (or two) to do #:-) .

Thanks!

Man, I wish my girl would like that 1/16 remote Tiger, so she could buy me one to ask me to build it for her! :-) :-)

The CMK engine sets are nicely detailed, just don't expect a full engine, it's just an insert with the transmission and engine oil coolers molded in one piece. Also there is no interior detail on the under side of the hood in case you model it with the hood forward.

Jeepney,
I did an open-hooded version of the Academy HMMWV some time ago and used the Tamiya M113 engine as a base. I cut it down in height and mated it to the Academy engine bottom. I had to do some surgery on the firewall to get it to fit, but it looks great. I used some car engine parts and other bits to fill out the remainder of the engine compartment to include brake master cylinder, altenator, etc. I also used the Tamiya M113 radiator. Add some wires and hoses, and you have a pretty good representation of a HMMVW engine. Even though the Tamiya M113 is a V6 engine and HMMWV is a V8, it is not too noticable since the V6 is larger than most V8's.

There's on on ebay but it says Tamiya or Italari.

GreyHunter: That engine bay looks great! I assume that the tan-colored parts come from the kit and the rest are from CMK am I correct?

HeavyArty: Thank you for the very informative post! It opened my eyes to what I'm about to get myself into. Problem is, the Tamiya M113 costs more than twice as much as the Academy Humvee #:-) . Off topic: do the Academy M113s come with engines?

Sabot: You must be the envy of many a US armor fan. You get to work with some of the best hunks of metal on the planet. And you get paid, too! Something tells me I'm on the wrong career path

SS-74: I'm a lucky guy but a 1/16 Tiger might be too much for the poor girl :-) I just got her an Academy 1/144 F-16 last night for $1.50 since she thought it was cute. She wants to paint it Gloss Red though but, what the hey she's having fun!

Keep the tips coming guys! I'm absorbing data like a sponge

Notes for today.

First option:
  Step 1. Buy/Steal/Snatch an Academy M113 engine.
Step 2. Buy/Steal/Snatch some automobile parts (maybe my compatriot crismag has some spares ).
  Step 3. Start carving plastic.

Second option:
Step 1. Look for CMK Humvee engine instruction sheet.
Step 2. Try to duplicate the resin inserts by carving plastic.

John - if you can't find a M113 Engine locally - I'll send you one...

Hi,

CMK stuff is IMHO, Top Notch, although I have not seen this particular engine set.

CAM (Former TAC) also makes a HMMWV engine block, but designed for the Italeri and Tamiya kits. I don't know the specifics on this one either.

CAM Resin

An option if not aware of it.....

Thanks,

Thanks puyallup7400! That instruction sheet will help a lot!

Thanks GunTruck! The postage might come out expensive though. My friend's sister is in the US for at least 6 months though. I will ask for her address.

Thanks kkeefe! The site had a pic of the engine. This makes visualizing the project much easier.

Notes for today:

1. Academy Humvees come with engine sidewalls so the radiator supports won't be too much of a problem.
2. The prominent tiedowns(?) are molded separately from the hood.

With Rob's pics and Dave's CMK diagram, you have a good platform to start scratchbuilding your engine !

Where can I buy a CMK engine? How much is it? A friend of a friend is in the US right now and I can ask her to bring it back when she comes home.

What is a good brand for resin Humvee replacement tires? How much is it?

Thanks!
