Anyone ever make their own part mounting studs? The items which are on the kits to mount hardware to the plastic.

Ideas?

I've made my own grab handles and straps and such for the engineering gear. If that's what you mean, I just used small guage wire, and foil for this.

I don’t know how to best describe what I mean but I will attempt without making it too wordy.

For my example, I will use a tank which requires you to attach a piece of hardware to the hull of the tank. Say the hardware is a box. To attach the box to the hull, you need to use screws.

What I am calling the “Mounting Studs” is the piece of plastic which is molded to the plastic hull of the tank where you screw the screws into to hold the box.

Hope that was not too confusing.

Are you looking for 1:1 scale tapped (threaded) 'bosses' (in the cycling world that's what we call them).
or are you looking for them in smaller scale. If it's smaller scale you may be able to get 'self tapping' screws that are made with really sharp threads that create the 'bolt' threads themselves. All you have to do is have the round stock in place.

Those would be more like Grab handles.... Most crews couldn't weld stuff on in a hurry.. so they Tied stuff wherever they could. Grab Handles are the easiest point.

Scott, you are right on... I have bought some round stock and self tapping screws... Been testing this out... the issue I have is it is for a full option Bandai 1/15 R/C TigerI. The mounts will be under some stress.

I am wondering if any one has made these things for scratch builders...

Thank each one of you for your response!

You may want to contact a local Machine Shop and have them mill them for you. I would be very easy for them to do it and it may be pretty inexpensive too. Check the yellow pages for 'fabricators' or 'metal work' heck - they may even have some ready made?

A couple of thoughts - you may get some round plastic stock and then some thin aluminum pipe and slide the plastic in side the aluminum to add strength.
Another thing you can do to ease the stress on the plastic rod stock is to drill a smaller diameter pilot hole all the way through fist then use the self tappers. This removes some excess material that the tapper screws have to 'move' out of the way.or push out/down...

I would like it to be plastic material in order to secure them to my tank.

they wouldn't be too dificult to make. you'd need some solid plastic rod (don't use acrylic too brittle) and a drill press or drill.
