I was in Germany for '85 but I did BrimFrost '82. However, I was on the home team with E Troop 1st Cav, 172nd Infantry Bde. as a medic with the recon platoon.

I was stationed at Ft. Wainwright (Fairbanks), we were by the airfield across from the NCO Club and the Class 6 store... handy when you conisder the amount of "anti-freeze" the grunts tended to go through on an average winter weekend. The things I remember most were the Northern Lights and the ice fog, don't know if you had the pleasure of experiencing that lovely weather pecularity.

We didn't have brewski machines in the barracks until I hit Wildflecken and our soda machine had a couple brands of beer in it. Beauty of hitting Germany when I did was not having to endure "new" Coke...it never made it to Germany. We did have fridges in our rooms at Ft. Wainwright, and if you played your cards right you acquired access to an used fridge to keep the brew cold, if you removed all the shelves and crisper drawer you could fit 8 1/2 cases of beer in the fridge.

Did you live in the old barracks. You know the one's, the 3rd&4th flooers where blocked of due to asbestos! The barracks we stayed in were across the airfield and most of the missions we went on we flew in chinoocs. Once we got to the staging area, we off loaded our slead (200lbs a least) and pulled it for miles like dogs.

E Troop lived over by Hangar 2, When I was in AK 222d Avn. Bn. had Hangar 3 and the Chinooks were down by the Four Seasons. If my memory serve me correctly, the barracks the transient units used were over by Hangar 1, and I'm not surprised the upper floors were closed off due to asbestos...they dated back to about WWII, Hangar 1 definitely did there is a good pic of it in "The Thousand Mile War" which dealt with WWII in Alaska.

We had snow machines in the unit to haul the akihos, one snow machine per platoon. I still remember sleeping in the 10 man tents on the ground... now the rotorheads all had cots, but as usual the grunts didn't rate 'em of course recon was always on some mission or other.
