Two museums in Balboa Park might interest you. The aerospace museum and the auto museum, no militaria there, but many really cool cars. There's also a museum of man which has spanish artifacts.
Old Town used to have a small western museum as well..
Just hanging in SD is going to let you see lots of hardware. Last time we were there, there were many a/c flying in and out onf NAS North Island, just across the bay from downtown and able to be observed from Point Loma. Along the western sides of Point lOma are remains of WW II bunkers. I donlt know how much, if anything is going on at Miramar, notrth of the city, but in its hayday it was Fightertown. You're also likely to see plenty of Marine choppers if your trvel just south of the city towards Tijuana.
Also well worth a side trip is the Wild Animal Park about 30 miles to the northeast as well as the zoo in Balboa.
Enjoy your trip.

The air museum in Balboa park (?) is pretty cool. They have an SR71 sitting gate guard style out front. That thing looks fast standing still.
There must be something naval out on Coranado Island, but I was there only briefly and had to do zoo/wild animal park stuff most of my time.
I did not have much luck finding hobby shops, but did see a couple. Nothing earth-shattering, and most were quite a drive from where I was staying donwtown near the new ballpark.
you MUST go eat at Rubio's. As a transplanted midwesterner living in the east, I was very sceptical about the idea of 'fish tacos' , but MAN are they gooooodddddddd.
And Stone Brewing Comapny's Arrogant Bastard ale
www.arrogantbastard.com is great too!

Thats right, I now live in Chula Vista, thats south of San Diego. Everytime I hear a chopper I go out running to check it out. I once thought I saw b--25 flying over my house, but Im not really sure

For Naval history, there is the USS Midway floating carrier museum down town on Harbor Blvd. Also, a couple blocks from the Midway is the Maritime museum with the ship used to film Master and Commander. They show the movie on the deck at night. About an hour and a half up Interstate 215 is the old March Air Force Base, now March Air Reserve Base. They have a great Museum there. Has all sorts of aircraft from biplanes to B52 and civilian aircraft too.

I know just about everywhere you turn down there is Navy, and they got a big sub base, but I'm not sure if it is open to the public.
I delivered there many times, and was able to set and watch one of the subs come in one day. Plus on the island was the naval air base.
Might be something to check into if you like Navy things.
