While stationed at Ft Hood in the mid 80s my battalion got tagged to do a little PR with some Boy Scouts. They were down for a tour arranged by the troop leader. Well the battalion commander decided to send a Bradley, a 901 and a 113 to the CITA for the kids to look over. At that time we could let civilians ride the vehicles so the PAO and I let them ride in my 113 and they loved it. Once around the CITA on the tank trail, through the water holes and over the bumps better than a roller coaster. They only got to climb in the Bradley and see how things worked. The PAO was talking to one of the granddads and found out he was a WWII Sherman driver. The PAO came over and talked to me and we decided to see if he wanted to drive the Bradley. Can you say big grin :-) . Well once around the parking area with the TC riding next to him and the driver setting behind him and he was done. Can you say bigger grin :-) :-) . He was so happy to get to drive the Bradley and comment on how easy it was compared to the M4. Needless to say there were a bunch of happy scouts and parents that day. The soldiers were proud to have shared time with a WWII vet. For a duty no one want to do on our weekend it turned out to be something special.
