Just saw this movie again. I have a question.
In the part when the Dirty Dozen was trying to capture General Breen's HQ during the war games they bring a fake injured soldier into the HQ. The Ernest Borgnine character figures out the Dirty Dozen has infiltrated the HQ when he sees the Dirty Dozen collecting these little rods just before the rest of the team assaults the HQ in the ambulance.
What exactly are those little rods they are collecting? I've been looking at that scene everytime I see that movie trying to see what are those little rods.

Why would collecting gun cleaning rods be significant to the capture of the HQ?

Great movie, one of my favorites. The little rods are syringes to "knock out" the HQ residents.
