Hi All,

Who here casts parts with resin?

What brand do you use?

Tips?

Long ago, in the 70s, I bought a system from K&B (?) that consisted of a powder to make the mould (I think this is available at craft shops, but now festooned with warnings about inhalation causing cancer--duh!) and a two part resin.

K&B went away in late 70/early 80s. I had lots of mould powder but no resins. I used epoxy. Some still look good.

Someone else just asked the same question a few days ago. Check out my reply there.

I like to use Smooth -On products. They are easy to use and they have everything you will need to get started. You can get the starter kit for around $25.00. It includes the mold material, the resin, the instructions and the mold release. http://www.smooth-on.com/products.htm

I've not done much resin casting but have done a few peices. I ordered the micro-mark resin starter set to use.. had no problems whatsoever. their stuff is 1 to 1 so is easy to mix and use. cost about $70 for the complete set. then after you can just reorder what u need at various prices.

Micro Mark Resic casting starter set.

I've never used smooth-on but have heard nothing but good things about it.

i use the micro mark stuff as well. i like it because it is easier mixing 1:1 than most other brands 10:1. also, micromark usually has next day shipping as standard here in the US. you can look at the crew gear in my photos, they were all cast using the micromark resin

You'll find plenty of information on this subject in the "scratchbuilding" forum. I suggest you make a search on the word "resin" and "casting" in that forum...

I use MicroMarc products and I like them pretty well - one word on the resin - MIXWELL well ok - two words Mix Well prior to combining them two parts and then prior to pouring.

I've used the casting resin from hobby shops to and like it pretty well. Ive used it for a number of things

I cast parts, I currently use the Alumilite stuff As the LHS carries it. I need to find a slightly slower curing resin though as i can't always work all the bubbles out of the molds.
