I just want to put out my experience in attempting to make a purchase from Dann........

I posted that I was looking for a kit, Dann responded telling me that he had one that he would sell. He told me the price including shipping, and asked me to pay through PayPal sending the money as a gift. If I didn't want to send the money as a gift, he requested that I pay the transaction fee that would be charged to the seller by PayPal.

As I am sure most people know, sending the money as a gift generates no charge to the seller, I believe it generates a very small fee to the person sending the money.

This is nice for the seller, as they don't get hit with a service charge; however, as the buyer, if you pay by sending the money as a "gift" there is zero protection should the item not arrive. There are a ton of reasons that could account for not getting the goods....everything from a legitimately lost package enroute to a dishonest seller.

Personally I think it is very poor form to ask a buyer to send money as a gift. Paypal isn't a free service, buyers and sellers should use it properly and work out a way to share the expense of the service charge. I am not including paying a business such as an online hobby shop, I am talking about members of this great community selling to one another. Expecting one person to bear that cost is tacky, just my opinion.

I told Dann that I wasn't comfortable sending the money as a gift, and asked how much to send so that the PayPal fee would be covered. He responded with "I don't know". That was odd to me, one would think that a seller would answer with "I don't know, but I will try to find out and get back to you"....or something along those lines.

When I asked if he could find out he responded by again asking me to send the money as a gift. Lastly, Dann stated that tracking and insurance are not available on international packages. I know this not to be true, perhaps he didn't know....who knows.

Dann attempted to reassure me that everything would be fine, as he would send me a picture of the shipping receipt and customs form.

It appeared to me that Dann wasn't interested in trying to work with to complete the sale properly, it felt like he just wanted the money sent as a gift. So I looked into it myself, it is a flat fee plus a percentage of the sale. I let him know, and also told him that tracking and insurance are available...at that point he stopped communicating.

The combination of asking me (more than once) to send the money as a gift, with an unwillingness to help determine the fee assessed to the seller, together with stating that insurance and tracking are not available for International mail from the US, and lastly no answer when I did find out how much to send so that the money wasn't sent as a gift all threw up red flags.

Sending money as a gift affords no buyer protection.

As for the fee, every other seller I have bought from offers to split the fee, and when I have sold I offer to split the fee with the buyer.

I am NOT saying Dann is dishonest,he has been registered on this forum for quite some time now. However his conduct around dealing with payment bothered me.

It just didn't feel right to me.

Here is the email exchange we had:

I have been dealing with a LOT of people in the US and internationally. I have NOT stiffed anyone. I send photos of kits, receipts , custom forms to prove I sent the packages even in the US where 1st class packages have tracking,

I have sent several packages abroad with the USPS folks telling me that there is no tracking nor insurance international post.

When I went to the PO the lady did not mention that tracking nor insurance was included so I assumed there was not.

I offered to sell u a kit you were trying to find even have you a discount

I have to drive to the post office then fall in line to get international postage quote and you do not even think about that

Your accusation is unfair

my feeling was not hurt

You were the one who brought this in public. I just defended myself against your attack.

You could have asked in this forum if anybody had done business with me instead of accusing me of being dishonest

I have to agree with Greg. I have done lots of international sales as a former ebay seller, and I know tracking is available. Many of my customers asked for tracking which I cheerfully supplied as I know stuff disappears in certain countries and as much as some items go for that tracking is necessary.

And the lack of desire to find out the info a potential buyer is asking is a red flag for me. Do you really want to sell your stuff or not?

Of course, the clincher is your snarky, "Good luck finding the kit." Prior to reading that I was looking at your 1/35 armor; now I am not.

Dan;

I just wanted to say I feel bad for how your post was hijacked and the insinuations, intentional or otherwise, made were unfair.

I have sold/traded on this, and other forums for years, and have never had any real issues. As for tracking internationally - well, I too was unaware of international tracking at first but found that I-national shipping is also very expensive (with & w/o tracking) that most traders/buyers did not want to pay. I therefore stopped international shipping as an option.

I am not scolding anyone who posted on this thread... since I really have no right to, but, feel it just got out of hand. Like everything else on-line - posting messages (social media, etc.) should be considered before hitting submit - including this one I am typing now. Good luck with the sale.
