I never fully understood this but, why do paint brushes have numbers (ie #0) and what do they measure represent.

I know its a silly question, but its something I just never found out or asked about

It's the size of the painrbush. The higher the number, the larger the brush. Sizes smaller than zero are measured with multiple zero's (i.e., 00, 000, 5/0, 10/0, 20/0). I have no idea what the unit of measurement is. HTH

Its the size of the bristles mainly refersto the tip as the '0's increase the tip gets smaller and visa versa as the numbers go up so the bristles get bigger.

Generally the numbers represent the size of the brush. "0" for example is smaller than a #4 but larger than a #5/0. I have brushes as small as #20/0 for fine detail work and as large as #10 for dusting pastels.

Hope this helps.
