Hi Guys.
I recieved an offer today from a member here, who wishes to buy my Dragon Scud launcher.
Thing is, I donīt have a clue what the going rate for models are. Im not BSing anybody with "museum standard" titles. Most of you know and have seen this model. It was built 1 year ago. Cost approx. 550 sek or $72 (todays conversion rate). Only minor additions like hydraulic hoses and maps. Thing is, it took 100 hrs plus to build and paint.
How much is it worth? If it was yours, how much would you want for it? etc?

I would say because of the effort and quality put into it, about 125-150... also seeing the prices put on finished models by others, it is a common price

it depends on how you appreciate your finished model. I have some models that I would just give them away, the fun was in building it and not having it in my bookshelf, but there are some others that I wouldn't even like to sell just now.

This model falls into the later category. I spent so much time on it and as its a beast to build, it actually was quite an achievement. Im proud of this model. On the other hand .. if I got a good price ... I would consider selling it and building it again!

I can say that the model should be $20-30 USD. That monster is very hard to build. I have mine which is bought 8 months ago and I can safely say that you need a lot of skill to build it.

Oopss... I'm sorry for the earlier price (I can't edit it, it's not yet visible). I thought that kit was cheap because I bought mine only for $20 USD. I think you can sell it for 100-125 USD.

Years ago, when I built models for MRC
for their box tops and trade shows,
the going rate was 3 times the cost of the kit.
and it had to be built completely, out of the box, by the way.
Using only what came in the box or instructions.

Haven't done it in years,
so can't say what they are paying now.

But even if you go with the 3 times figure,
that brings it to about $210,
with about 100 hours, at a dollar an hour, it's 172 dollars.

My advise is:
Good luck and get what you can.
Nice looking model,
but I learned when I was getting paid for them,
never get emotionally attached to them,
because you'll never get paid for the time you put into them.

If you paid $75 for it and you sell it for $150 but it took you 100 hours to build you are getting only $0.75/per hour of labor. I know my time and skill is worth more than $0.75/hour. Even at the minimum wage rate of $4.75 (I think that's where it's at currently in the US) you should be getting $475 in labor alone. Going strictly by the numbers, unless you can get $550 for it I wouldn't bother.

This does not even count all the years it takes for you to perfect your skill over the years to create this beauty.

2 X cost is about right. You do get the learning experiance from building it.And you will be able to make the next one better, and assemble it quicker.Plus you have the pleasure of building...

I have built some models on consignment. I start at 2x price of the model to build it straight out of the box with maybe a few minor tweeks. For added stowage not in the kit, and maybe a figure, I add another 1x the kit. For just figures added, I add $5 per figure. These prices usually include a simple wood base as well. Good luck.

Plastic Battle - Shes a beauty
so I'd be attached myself,
therefore I'd keep her.

In leui of that -
if youre still inclined to trade for cash and rebuild a new one, you have experience on your side this time (on that particular kit)
and two to three times your materials costs seems reasonable to me.

Because the potential customer recognizes your time, effort and skill or they wouldnt be interested in negotiating with the builder. BUT I dont see how they could feasibly compensate you a comparative hourly wage, and make it a sensible business transaction.

The dont get emotionally involved advice was solid. BUT I couldnt follow it myself, still sound advice nonetheless.

Best of luck

-first......-I wouldn't sell it, you didn't build it for the buisness and with the money you would do it over again, so way sell it then?!

-second....- when selling stuff (just like in selling paintings) you can't calculate the hours of work in it (that would make the price of the piece of art go thru the roof) so that would leave you with the actual costs and just a bit of profit....

But, good luck! (and she sure is a beauty! )

Depends on the market. Last year was terrific, I was netting $50 US/hr of building. This year, its not worth it anymore.

For a scud such as your, I would say there is a "rarity" factor inherent to that would increase the price beyond what is normally reserved for yet-another-Tiger. I would ask $250 US ofr the scud, and see where it goes. Use ebay, and include the words "Built" and "1/35" in your subject line. Category #2588. Good luck with it!
