I'm just curious. How many kits do you currently have under way? I don't mean ones that have been relegated to the Shelf of Shame.

Personally, I've only got one under the knife at the moment. I love the campaigns here on Armorama. They help keep me motivated to actually finish something. Otherwise, I get the "SQUIRREL!!" syndrome about 2/3 of the way through one.

One. Always. I don't like leaving things unfinished. I usually only build one at a time, from start to end.

I do have one "shelf queen" though. I built the Trumpeter M1078 LMTV Armored Cab for a review here in June, 2013 and never painted it. It is 95% done, sitting in a box waiting for the motivation to paint and finish it. I even have a Tank Workshop resin tarp for the rear to add to it. Sometime soon...

I did finish up two other trucks (M1074 PLS and Mk23 MTVR) that were in boxes this year so far. Maybe the LMTV will be next after my M2 Reforger build.

I've got the Tamiya Bradley kit you are talking about in another message thread on my Shelf of Shame. I've even gone as far as canabalizing parts off of it. I lost a taillight on my M9 ACE and stole one off the Bradley to replace it.

I got the two in my sig chilling on my bench. The AZ is probably 80% done but I ran into some snags with the fitment and the Vette is maybe 40% done and I am just lazy.

I want to move on to other projects but I REFUSE to have a Shelf of Shame™

Richard, I ashamed to admit it but there is a bunch in a large box I refer it as "The Mañana Box" ( sorry, I don't know how to do a tilde). Filled with kits that have indy links, need paint and/or weathering, or like you, the 2/3's Squirrel Syndrome.
But ! I am currently working on Tamiya's new Stuart for the SWAMPS group build (it was due last month) but my goal is to have it ready by the next meeting! And I'm cleaning up indy track links for Mengs Jagdpanther. 3 parts per link an 5 attachment points to cut & clean up X 200.

Long term goal is to empty the box of shame first and then work on my 3 dioramas I've bought most of the stuff for.

My workbench is hidden beneath a pile of other stuff that I haven't had time to take care of (things from the family needing small repairs, useful bits and pieces to be sorted, small electronics to be scrapped to recover useful bits and pieces).
I REALLY need to get that bench sorted ... sigh ....

I've got shelves I need to put up in our designated "hobby room". Half of my side is dedicated to my ham radio stuff and the other half is for my model stuff. My stash has gotten too big to just be housed on the shelves in the closet.

My answer--too many. But, in my opinion, too many is better than none at all!

Four. Working on multiple kits in a round Robin fashion is how I try to avoid the "squirrel!" Syndrome.


That said I have a box that is really more of a "how the hex do I finish this?" As opposed to shelf of shame. And there are a bunch on the shelves waiting for crews and for me to decide on how to weather them.

A lot depends on defining "on the bench", as I build at the table! Usually there's only one actively getting built at a time, but there are many part-built kits waiting for inspiration to finish them. That often strikes when I get to the panting stage of a build...

As to my answer about "too many is better than none at all", I can also relate somewhat to Tom's comment above, since I usually have a main workbench in my garage. But during the winter, it's often too cold to work in the garage, so I also have a "hobby desk" I share with my wife, saving the garage for painting only (in the presence of a good space heater). And during the summer, when the weather is often really nice for stretches of a week at a time here in the Pacific Northwest, I also have a table outside under a covered deck (building outdoors is very relaxing and enjoyable under the right conditions). So sometimes, I'm nuts enough to have two or three builds ongoing, or I might be building components of one model in three different areas. Yes, "too many is better than none at all". And the inventive can always find space for another place to work (a few years ago, Fine Scale Modeler ran a feature on a guy who built a folding bench in a coat closet!). So, defining the "bench" might just depend on what time of year it is or the space available. When I was in the Army, I didn't have a lot of time to relax and build, but, on the occasions when I did, I pulled out my portable 2'x3' work table built to fit over a laundry room sink and kept my tools and paints in two large fishing tackle boxes.

Hey Robin, thanks for adding the tilde for me ! It looks a heck of a lot better.

So, this thread has inspired me (don't know for how long) but I've pulled out some kits with indy links and started to trim & clean them. The Meng Jagdpanther's tracks are ready for assembly. Now I'm on to Meng's Leopard I A5. These are fiddley & fragile. But it's nice to sit outside and trim & sand listening to old Blues music.

I have a system and it's working for me. My score, since I joined Armorama one year and three months ago is 21 finished, 0 unfinished models. They are all in campaigns section and I totally agree with Richard - campaigns are great motivation. So much so that I plan my future purchases by upcoming campaigns.

Howdy Y'all
This thread is motivating me to drop some of my campaigns. Plus, my wife has been playing "minimalism" and "get rid of the stuff" Ted talks and videos all day. The campaigns are great motivators to "build and finish" models and I appreciate all the work the Campaign Administrators do for the site. My problem is I enlist in too many and finish too few. My workbench is covered with the detritus of life and family but it's only used for airbrushing. All my model building is done on the kitchen table.
To answer the question: Three. I try to keep a rotation going so I don't get bored with one build. I also have a couple of dozen shelf queens. My three current builds:
-D&D Phase Spider for the Sci-Fi V campaign,
-U-Wing Fighter for the Bandai campaign, and
-Tamiya WWI British Infantry for the Great War campaign.
I might not finish the U-Wing fighter but may get the Tie Striker and Battle Tanks finished. The kit comes with a 1/144 U-Wing fighter, Tie Striker and two battle tanks; quite a collection.
I'm going to drop all my other campaigns except the Unfinished Business, Hangar Queen and Dry Docked campaigns. That will give me 6 models to try and finish for the year. I may also enlist in the 8th AAF campaign but haven't made up my mind yet but that goes into next year so there is less stress.
