Hi Guys,

IPMS_BAC was asked to build 1/48th and 1/72nd planes that flew in the Philippines for the 100th years fo flight exhibit of NAIA terminal 2. The exhibit includes two dioramas, tons of photos of notable planes, flight related documenation, and plastic models. The San Miguel was my contribution to the effort. I was given the model, references, and decals by IPMS-BAC and the responsibility for building it. You will see it in the 1/72 diorama of the Manila International aiport circa 1950's.

It was a fast build and minimal weathering. we only had three weeks to complete it. Anyway, do visit the exhibit at NAIA Terminal 2. Also, you will find Buck's 1/48 th scale P-51 D Mustang owned by Zobel.

Enjoy the photos

Hey Wanze,

That's a fine loooking B-17G. It a good representation of the "San Miguel" in 1/72 scale. I didn't know that there is one. Again great work!!
Now my 2nd question is -Was it Fernando Amorsolo who conceptualized the San Miguel "logo"? wala lang kasi thru the years the logo never change.

Nice build there Wanze. Maybe you could post pics of that exhibit. I'd like to see how the airport looked some 50 years ago.

Hi Blitz and Cardinal,

Thank you for the nice comments. Too bad, I don't get to keep it since it will be at the permanent display. So, I will make another one for myself in 1/72.

Blitz,

You're right about Amorsolo's work on the San Miguel logo. I was hoping that it was on the plane but the reference did not have it. We printed the custom made "San Miguel" logo and registration numbers in decal paper.

Cardinal,

I will try to get copies of the diorama pics and post it. Aside from the Manila Intl. airport, they also built a 1/48th dio of the Nielsen airfield. The Nielsen airfield is now the Ayala triagle in Makati. The Nielsen museum is the old tower and terminal of the airfield.

GI,

Yep, had a great time building the kit. Moreover, it was nice building something with Philippine flavour. Everybody should try it for a change. Moreover, we should have a collection of our local hardware.

And heres the Red Mustang. Dont know why the red color looks kinda wavy from the pic. I actually had less than 2 weeks to finish this kit. The black cheatline was really a pain.

Bistro,

Nice to see your B-17 again, man! This time with markings. Thats one great looking plane. The San Miguel nose art really sets it apart.

Buck:
I saw this model up close. It was really refreshing to see a bright red Mustang for a change! And yes, the black cheat line was the first thing I noticed, as in the clean way it was done. So your hard work really paid off. Well done!

Wanze: The 'San Miguel" logo really gives this plane character, especially since it lost all it guns! It was weird seeing a B-17 without its usual "horns". Sana they retained the chin turret. They could have painted it to look like a keg!

According to El Jefe, the project at NAIA has received praise from the head of the terminal. Even some old/former air traffic controllers were so impressed with the circa 50s terminal. That's the way they remembered it daw. Good work to everyone, considering the amount of time we all had to finish our respective assignments! Even R2's FEATI DC-4 made it, and someone who actually rode in that plane was there to enjoy it! :-)

I know about the Neilsen airfield. I used to work in Makati & our office was situated just across of the Ayala Triangle. I pass by there almost everyday when I was there. It would be good to see the pictures of the dios. Thanks Wanze.

Bull,

Thanks! It was kinda difficult to do, but enjoyable at the same time. I had a hard time parting with the Mustang, really. Im looking forward to seeing the exhibit.
