Everyday I go to stir my steelwool pad, and water, and everyday there is a film on top like a thin crust, and the water looks black instead of rust, did I do something wrong, now on the sides where the water has evaporated, it has a rust color that has hardened, but that is it?

Let the water evaporate and then crush the metal "blob" you get and your rust will be ready...

I thought mine wasn't working either. I had the same little blobs of rust, but then I forgot about it for a couple weeks. When I went back and poked it, it just powdered exactly as they said it would.

I guess I should of tore the pad in two, and done a lot less water, then I'd had it done by now, cause it has been a week, and looks like another week before it will be ready then. Thank You guys for your answers, at first I thought I had forgot some of the recipe.

I have done it and I just can't get it to stick to my models. Though, being the "master modeler" #:-) that I am, I realized that it is a basically a rust powder. Well, now I use it to look like a smoke stain. Anyhoo, how can I get it to stick? Thanks for your time.

I don't know MEBM, I remember reading about it somwhere, and I tried the search, and it wouldn't turn it lose either, cause after I get it ready, I intend to use it, but don't know how either, seems like it was one of the thinners they used or water, but not sure, now like me I remember somethings but not all.

I have found that if you put the mixture of the steelwool pad and water in a window that gets lots of sun (like a south facing window here in the north) it speeds up the process of making the rust.
As far as how to use it...if I recall you just mix it with a little water to form a sort of paste, and then apply it to the model sparingly until you get the results you want.
Just my two cents...

To meke it sticky I use:
- isopropyl alchool
- white spirit
- a mixture of white glue (to replicate a very heavy effect)
- on its own (on a model finished with Testors Dullcote which makes it adhere)
If you go back to this thread Replicating realistic rust for dummies you'll find a pic showing how does it look after application with the above mentioned mediums...

I knew there was a story back there somewhere, but I typed in rust, making rust, painting rust, and never did find it, one of these days I'll get that search figured out on how to find things. I thank You very much Ciao

Dear General,
Are those carriers you listed choices? Or do you combine them all?
