Hello,
New to this site but I am wanting to build an M814 Extended Bed 5 Ton 6x6 truck for use in a HAWK Missile System Diorama.
Was wondering if this kit: 1/32 M559-249 Renwal Wrecker Crane US Army 5 Ton 6 x 6 would be a good base model to start with?

The HAWK Missile kit I am using is: Plastic Model Scale Kit Adams 1/40 Hawk Missile Battery - With Loader - Launcher - Tracker and Crew.

I have not done much modifying but after reading on this site it is the only way I am going to get the vehicle I need.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

One like this ?

For 1/35th scale you have these options:

There used to be a conversion set from RealModel for the Italeri M923 or "Bigfoot" to make the M927:

The product number for this set was 35037.
It looks as in PanzerShop
http://www.panzershop.cz/inshop/
might have one, e-mail him and ask before getting your hopes up [email protected]

The conversion set for the M800 cab (only the cab) is still available:

Italeri base kit + cab conversion + scratch the load bed
or get lucky and use
Italeri base kit + cab conversion + M927 load bed (frame extension, load bed + minor details if I remember correctly).

Are you planning on using the older kits as templates to scratch build rescaled copies in a common scale?
Doing the M814 in 1/35th brings it a little bit closer to the 1/40th Hawk battery ....

The old Revell Wrecker is really bad and old, first offered in teh late '50s). There is an article here on Armorama on combining an AFV Club M35 and the Italeri M923/5 to make an M54 (predecessor to the M813). You could use it as a guide and reshaping the hood and grill to build an M813.

Also, look at this thread for more info on the Revell Wrecker and 5-tons.

Great info....trying to get as close as possible to the 1/40 scale of the hawk set...wanted the 813 look as it is closest to era of my hawk set.

Didn't realize it would be so hard to find a kit close enough...I was a 63B in my early army career when we had the M42 Duster AAA system...then transitioned to HAWK and then I-HAWK. Changed MOS to 16S/16M when we transitioned Stinger/Avenger. Finished career as 92F Avenger system repairer. Now trying to recreate some of the weapons systems I worked on.....

It has been really difficult sourcing kits etc....but I am getting close.

M814 has been toughest by far to source parts.

Thanks for the info

Does the Real Model 35037 kit also work on the Italeri M925 kit?
I also found the M800 cab conversion...so I may be getting closer.
