More of a WWI item but still in used well beyond WWII were the "Sure-Stop, Fire Grenades":
At first these thin glass balls were filled with salt water but they later used Carbon Tetrachloride as a fire suppressant. The idea being that anyone could throw these at the base of the fire like a softball upon which they would shatter releasing the chemical. However they were generally phased out starting around 1910 due to the harmful affects (to humans) of the CTC. These devices may still be found in some antique sales.

Finally the good ole "fire bucket". Round bottomed so it could not be used for any other purpose, these were usually placed strategically in racks around the hanger or factory in groups of 6 or 8 and often pre-filed with sand.

These were particularly popular on old wooden steam ships and paddle wheeler riverboats.

Again in the 50's these were a popular fire fighting means at the main Churchill Downs clubhouse as well as around the horse barns.

The Fire Buckets are even included on these beautiful scale models of sternwheelers seen at the Howard Steamboat Museum in Jeffersonville, IN

That being said, the ones I'm looking at aren't very good and could do with more detail. And maybe they aren't the ones you're looking for?

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the problem with the current group of fire extinguishers is the the majority, if not all are modern day units with nothing exactly specialized for the 1940's.

p.s. I apologize for going nuts on the old style extinguishers but that is my point precisely, there is a need for WWII period units.
