I know the general outline, but I wondered what happened in France itself. Did people flee from German-occupied France to the other part, and did the Germans try to stop them? And what did the Germans do when establishing themselves? I read that the later-famed Otto Skorzeny had thought the war was going to end then and there.

Yes, yes and the history of occupied France is one of disaster, treachery, collaboration, atrocity, communists, le Resistance, pompous Frenchman, and a whole pile of books and movies and controversy.

Selling out Jews and SS wantonly massacring villages happened. Romanticized resistance and demonized collaboration happened.

And when all is said and done, there is very little good that can be said about the Germans, other than having cool uniforms and neat armored vehicles.
