Today, 15 September, 1916, that tanks were first used in combat on the Somme. 100 years ago, and how far armor and their use have come forward.

I was able to learn how to use one of these tanks, the M60A1, in 1978-79 at Fort Knox Armor Officer Basic Course; in West Germany in 1979 with H Company, 2/11th ACR; and then trained on the M60A3 in 1986 at Fort Knox for the Reserve Officer Advanced Course. I also help field the new tanks in the 1980's in West Germany.

I have been doing tank models since 1968 (Aurora 1/48th scale Panther) and done some kits since lost count long ago). All a great time. All for the reason that the Allied armies of WWI had to find a way across No Man's Land, crush the barb wire, and run over those German machine gun positions.
