So I was curious about how to fix my model since the paint is totally messed up, I sprayed the model with the canned tan and dark green MM paint from testors and then directly applied what I thought was a good white wash, I took a BB sized dab of oil paint and perhaps a tablespoon or so of mineral spirits after applying the wash if it can even be cALLED that, I noticed the original paint started to bleed through and now the model is ugly. I am new to weathering and wanted to try a white wash technique I saw on youtube to simulate winter camo, how can I save the model, I mean what should I use to clean it? Definitely not carborator cleaner haha learned that the hard way by ruining the shirzen on another model, wont do that again...any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

For me or you dont leave enough time to cure the first pait cote,i wait minimum 24h,or the Mineral spirit is to Hot and eat the paint job or is also possible you play to much with the brush and scrub the pait under the white wash...i never use MM pait, the spray can is laquer or Enamel?...if enamel without a acrylic satin/gloss/matt cote over it is always a bit tricky, you can (i do with Humbrol) but you have to be carefull and leave cure really well the pait and be gentle

I recently ruined the paint job on a Tiger tank.I was advised to spray the model with Easy Off oven cleaner and put in a plastic bag overnight, then use a tooth brush to get it down to plastic and start over again.

I have not tried it,but it wasn't the 1st time I heard that,perhaps others have tried ?

I think I waited around 18 hours before I applied the "white wash" The brush thing that was mentioned is probably what happened, I scraped it. As for the oven off, thank you for the advice, I am just worried it will ruin the plastic? Like I said I ruined the shirzen on my stug by spraying it with carb cleaner and the plastic started to disintegrated or almost like melt in way

Justin,

You basically painted your model with MM spray cans which are
enamels and then added oil paint thinned with mineral spirits
over this without an acrylic barrier, leading to the wash chewing
thru the original enamel paint.

The principle rule to washes is acrylics over enamels
or enamels over acrylics.

In any case, all is not lost. Strip the model using Testors F542143
decal and paint remover or Easy Off over cleaner, and repaint.

Spray your model with Easy Off, wait till the paints softens and scrub
with an old tooth brush.

Softening time varies as too how long the initial paint has dried.

The Easy Off will not affect the plastic model.

Cheers,
Joe

Thank you for the knowledge, I am new to washes and weathering and I really want to take the models I build to the next level and with everything there is a definite learning curve and I guess this is part of me growing and improving as a modeller. I look at some of the things you guys do on here and am completely amazed at the amount of talent and skills, which no doubt took years to hone and many mistakes along the way... Case in point is the fully loaded special operations hummvee that Mario dude is building, That is truly astonishing work!! Any ways so enamel then acrylic right? So how are people on youtube using oil washed and what not? well I guess I shouldve prefaced this by saying the youtube video I tried to emulate the guy used Tamiya xf paints or whatever... I dont have an airbrush yet too, i plan to get one soon but for now I just dont have the disposable income to invest in one, I got a badger basic one but that is only useful for broad paint applications not fine detail

If for now you are to continue to use enamels as a basecoat...proceed as follows:

Base coat with enamels, wait for this to properly dry.
Coat with an acrylic varnish and wait till dry.
Do your oil thinned with mineral spirits washes.
It will all work out.

Some will say that 24 hrs. is plenty for paints to dry.

I prefer to wait 2-3 days in between the different steps.

That is just me...better safe than sorry.

Which Badger do you have?

Cheers,
Joe

ok thank you for clarifying the steps, now one quick question about the steps, when you say acrylic varnish do you mean I could use testors 1260 dullcote or what do you mean? I have the basic spray gun set badger 250-2. I havent exactly used it much because I am kind of intimidated by it , I have the canned propellent and like I said its ok for broad applications, I dont think you can change the tip as I have tried.....

I forgot to point out that the Badger airbrush I got was like 17bux from my local hobby shop here in myrtle beach and I am glad I screwed this paint job up on the model I did, I screwed up the tamiya panzer 2 aus f/g which I got from hobby lobby for like 12 bux so I would rather screw up a 12 dollar model than a 60 dollar model right? cheers

If you use Oil pait is really slow dry,i like this becose if you make a mistake you have time to fix with some white spirit, when you think is dry wait and give another day or 2,also depend from season in summer get faster then winter

Hi Justin,

Testor Dullcote is not an acrylic but a lacquer varnish. This
is OK to use as lacquer is not affected by mineral spirit washes
and will protect the enamel base coat.

Also be sure that it is Dullcote which less agressive than Testor's
LUSTLESS FlatCoat which very agressive and will lift acrylics and enamels.

So YES use Dullcote but in light coats and allow time for it
to properly dry.

Again my suggestion 2-3 days.

I have never used that particular airbrush but it looks like
something best used to do general large area work maybe like
painting diorama bases or applying bottled varnish.
It is a pretty basic airbrush.

Cheers,
Joe

Awesome thank you very much for your insight, all I want to do is improve my skills and produce models with quality on par with you guys... I mean dont get me wrong I enjoy this hobby but I would enjoy it a lot MORE if I were better than I am, but practice makes perfect.

As far as the airbrush is concerned I couldnt agree more, I used it to spray a base coat on my stug and then when I decided I wanted to try to do a finer detail I couldnt so yes this is definitely a broad application airbrush. I will defintely use the knowledge you shared with me and again thank you!!

Cheers to you mate

Hi Justin,

Modeling is a progressive hobby. We all start at the bottom
of the ladder and work our way upon and as we do, the models
we produce get better and better.

And with each and every model we build, we strive to better
ourselves and outdo the previous model.

Patience and practice will help you achieve your goals, also
as you progress you will find a need for more refined tools.

Build up the arsenal of tools as your budget allows but a
better airbrush and compressor combo should be at the top
of the list....it will change your modeling results forever.

Take it one step at a time and you will get there.

Cheers,
Joe

Justin,

Watch these videos. It gives a great tutorial on weathering. I think it's a three part video. I'll provide you the link to part 1, and you should be able to find his subsequent videos.

These really helped me.
