Need some help, folks. I have been using oils for washes and filters over acrylics for years with no problems.

Recently, I've suddenly started having problems with the washes causing the acrylics to pucker and lift, and I get left with alligator skin in some spots, or worse; the acrylic paint comes away altogether and I'm left with a spot I have to repair and/or hide. I generally use Pledge as an overcoat between laying down acrylics and applying oils.

Like I said, it's never been an issue until very recently, and there are only two things I can think of that have changed.

The first is that I'm using a different brand of turpentine to dilute the oils because the brand I was using in Japan is not available in the US. It does appears to be stronger stuff, but I was always under the impression turpentine shouldn't affect acrylics.

The second thing is that I switched from polyester-acrylic primer to regular automotive primer recently because it gave me much better adhesion. I thought that the turps might be affecting the primer so I switched again to Mr Surfacer in a rattle can. After a few tests it seemed like the Mr Surfacer remained pretty bullet proof, and from what I can see the turp is still loosening the acrylics without damaging the primer.

Anyone have any experience with this and can recommend a fix?

Mark,
Get rid of the turpentine. It's too strong. Some turps will eat through anything, especially the delicate surface of acrylics, even with Future protection.
Switch to odorless mineral spirits.

Agree with above. Not all turpentine is safe, I had one that cracked my paint also... Since I switched to odorless AK or Ammo white spirit I have had no troubles.

The stuff I used to get in Japan was actually labeled "Spirits of Turpentine" and was definitely lower-odor than what I currently have--I'm guessing that's what the Japanese refer to mineral spirits as.

I realize this is an old thread, but you might try "Turpenoid". Get the blue and white container. Mild and low odor.
