Think of any reason why Vallejo's very good line of polyurethane surface primers couldn't also be used as a standard paint? They come in lots of colors and I've got dunkelgelb which is also a color I'd like now. Going to use it over hairspray. A bit more grain perhaps, but quickly solved with clear.

I've been doing some medical experiments. I think you're right if one is very careful - multiple thin coats at low psi. The stuff appears to shrink more than standard Vallejo which helps to leave detail clear if applied correctly. It has very powerful coverage though and if it goes on in too heavy a coat detail is gone very quickly. I'm not sure what the chemical difference is, but it Surface Primer does not act like either Model Color or Model Air. Considering it's very low viscosity the coverage is quite dense - but okay if put on slowly. But it's not the same.

i personally don't like it and would rather use the tamiya light grey from a rattle can, but at the end of the day its a paint and if it works for you then go for it.

I use rattle cans for clear coating - have them matte, satin and gloss. The primer is good, but one can over-do it, especially outside at night. I have Tamiya primer in a bottle and could thin it, but I hate lacquers inside. Phil Flory used to simply use whatever paint he had too much of as a primer - probably work fine.
