how to waterproof an M4

How was the standard M4 waterproofed? This photo of Lucky Legs II from Bougainvile is the tank I am wondering about.

According to the tank commander, they had just landed and were removing the waterproofing when there was a Japanese counterattack. They had pulled the tape and tar off the turret which is why the lower half of the star is visible-the top still has the tar on it.
