I think there is an ongoing issue. I too fumbled around wondering why I was having problems with my uploads including my avatar and thumbnail pics. I ran across this post a few days ago. I think it is being looked at.

I've just found out that image links from photobucket.com work OK but strangely google photos/picasa don't. Posted my pics already.

My avatar doesn't show anymore and I can't upload photos into my gallery. It just says directory error and advises to contact admin....

Try this. It worked for me. In your photo gallery find the photo you use as your avatar and click it. Down below where the pic would be you should see some little icons. Hover over each one until you find the one that says edit and click it. You should see a couple options one of them is rebuild thumbnail. Click it then save. I did it and my little avatar showed up again. If you get an error then you have a worse problem than me and need to flail your arms wildly to get the attention of the admins.

Hope I am not premature but my uploaded pictures are starting to come back thumbnails included. So far I have one picture that still has an error.

Gents Jim S is working on this as it appears to be a coding issue that is causing issues. It is one of Jim's priorities to resolve this issue.
