Keele University (in the United Kingdom), as from this monday will be putting on-line their archive of over FIVE-MILLION photo-recce images (principally from WW2) the archives have been digitalized and are available for public access. I have seen some of them, the images of Omaha beach are particularly striking. More than anything an interesting perspective on military photography. the site can be seen at:

I think the site has been killed because too many people are trying to access it. Killed their server. They said last week they were getting a lot of hits when the pictures were not even on line yet.

Behold the Power of Armorama!! Crashed the website. Maybe their IT guy ought to go feed the gerbil on the wheel that is powering their server...
Kidding. I think they knew this was going to happen about two weeks ago from what I read. I still get the "Cannot Open Page" message here...
Shaun
EDIT 5 million pictures. If you looked at one picture a minute for 40 hours a week, it would take you 40 years to look at them all. If you're on dial up, you would be dead before you could check them all out... CLOSE EDIT

IIRC when Pathfinder landed on Mars, JPL hooked up either 6 or 8 additional T-1s to their server because of the volume of hits they expected. In the first few hours after landing they were getting 40 million hits an hour! So the photo archive being swamped doesn't suprise me at all.
