I just finished reading this book. Very cool.
This is about Otto Carius's military career. He was in the Schwere Panzer Abteilung 502, and served with the first operational Tigers at the Leningrad Front in late 42-early 43.
Not only giving some personal combat history, but the book also delves into the problems with the Tigers from their initial teething problems. Problems like the original designed Cupola, engine fires and Just simply driving and recovering disabled tigers.
I don't know about all maintenence all you Ex- tanker guys out there had to do in your term of service, but these machines kept the German maintenence company busy!

Anyone interested in Tigers and who likes autobiographies would enjoy this book.

One of the great failings of the German Army was the obsession with 60 ton+ tanks. The Tiger was a nightmare to recover off the battlefield, unlike the Sherman's and the M-26 recovery vehicles which by itself could pull a disabled Sherman off the field of battle.

This is one of the reasons for the bergpanther and tiger. The need for something just as big to recover a disabled Panther/Tiger. the Germans never had enough of these and many tanks were lost for the lack of recovery.
