Dear all,

reading an article about the 960th Quarter Master Service Cie, I just wodered why it is very, very difficult to find models and heads of Afro-Americans. I intended to create a black GMC crew, but until now, I stuck.
Which, to me, is remarkable since over 1,2 million Afro-Americans joined the US Army during WW2.

Please, where can I find fitting heads?

Thanks in advance,

P

do they really look that different? honestly, it seems more about skin tone than facial features. My point is most African Americans are of mixed race. Why do they not have Mexican american fitting heads? my old man served in WW2, he was from Mexico as were my uncles.

Hi David,

Got your point. Though it was not my intention to exclude some one, I was just wondering.
A hint for the Hornet sculptures, maybe???

Well Hornet makes negro heads, as I bought some for French colonial artillery at DBP, which drew its personnel from the French colonies in Africa.

There are some skull morphology differences from Caucasians but I doubt most people would be able to determine nationality from looking at a head, although ethnic group is a bit easier. A bit like telling a Chinese American (or a Chinese Norwegian for that matter) from a Chinese person really.

Hi Paul,

Not impossible. Have you checked-out the Hornet Heads catalog? I believe there are several very good candidates for African Americans available (look at the third series down and a few others on the page). Skin tone and skinny mustaches for the time period should do the trick. Trust me, Mah Bruthah!

Here's an eBay link.

I contacted Roger Saunders of Hornet & Wolf via e-mail back in February, 2014. Unfortunately, in his reply, Mr. Saunders informed me that he has retired from figure sculpting.

Good luck with your project!

I have a similar problem- I am working on figures for an Ethiopian diorama. I have the Hornet African head sets and managed to find another African head that Hornet have- it is in the head set where the figures are aiming down sights/squinting. Personally I wish they would do more African heads with more expressive features as the African head set doesn't really have that much of a variety of expressions. But as Mike has mentioned- it would appear there will not be any forthcoming new releases from Hornet.
I believe Verlinden also do some African heads. But as David pointed out- skin tones are really what make heads come alive- whether they are Middle Eastern or African or Hispanic etc.
