So the sway bar predates the cars and trucks ?

I would just call it part of the frame or an axle support. There is nothing that makes it an anti-sway bar. It is just a few chunks of board lashed together that the axle attaches to.

It’s called a wagon body side support. They had them for the rear axle in a fixed position and they also had them for the front axle that were able to turn with the axle when the wagon made a turn. Most wagon boxes sat on a spring set up kind of like a leaf spring on cars today. If they were hauling a heavy load over uneven ground, the side supports helped keep the box from swaying side to side which could flip the wagon on it's side. So basically they were just supports to help hold the wagon box steady.

That clarifies it ... thanks Randy!
What had me confused was 'Staligrad's' images posted in the 'Armorama' review link, where it would appear that the support was on the left rear axle only. Upon further research, I found that there are two different versions of the cart.
